Two products I was wondering if anyone has any experience with:

GW's basing kit - it's twenty bucks, and comes with a few resin bases and some other basing stuff.

GW Academy - the seventy buck class.

Basing kit - meh. I thought I could get better material from Hobby Lobby in their model train section.

Academy: really good if you're a beginner. Depending on who is teaching, can be a great experience. Plus you get to use their supplies.

The 40k basing kit resin bits:
The ones for 25mm bases fit fine after sanding them flat.
The ones for 40mm bases don't fit at all - they are about 6-7mm too large all around. If you have access to a belt linisher, this is not an issue (I do) - otherwise, you will want to pass on them.
The slate, gravel and bits are nice, and stick easily (superglue is recommended for the slate bits).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

You can get better for your money.

There are alternatives for the resin basing. In fact, you can get a batch of resin for about 5 bucks and get three times as much resin for the money( Albet, you have to fix up, treat, and cure the resin stuff, or you can get a couple of resin model making products for around 20-30 bucks. of course, Verdun has bunch of excellent basing kits and accessories that is worth the prices of course, you won't get the hi speed GW snacks, but you can always do that by other means. (Reaper has a few different alternatives for skulls)

GW Academy... This is something that can be pretty much sumed up as YMMV. Other then that, a saturday afternoon with your local crew can do wonders for free, where the 70.00 can go to gaming, modeling, and scenery. It all depends on the quality of the instruction. You can do better by just sitting down, coming up with a paint scheme and going to work.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

It's a big step to start making your own resin moulds if you are just starting in the hobby.

Take a look at the various basing supplies in this thread:

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
