Hello all,
I've been buying the GW movement trays for WOTR and am happy with these. Each, as you know, accepts 8 models. But I've been thinking about 9-model units, such as the Fellowship or a unit containing all nine Ringwraiths. Obviously, I could make my own base, and perhaps I am missing something obvious, but how do I field a unit like this if I want to use a GW movement tray?
Is a 9-model movement tray made? Or a 12-model tray? Or do I use 2 8 model trays?
I'm sure this has come up in your circles. What have I missed? How do I base these?
Thanks!
Solorg

Since GW only makes basses for infantry and cavalry, you pretty much have to make your own formation trays for other units who have oddly shaped bases.
Suggestion?
Litko bases.
You can have them custom make an asortment of bases for you if you dont have the time, energy, know-how to make your own. They can even cut out the whole for you if you ask them to if thats what you need.

I have tried stiff card, but for something a bit more sturdy, I turned to the GW modular movement trays from WHFB. See p. 231.
If you look on p. 237, you can see the Three Hunters are on one. On the same page, I think the Nine are on a base made by fastening together two infantry company trays.

Hmm, I will take a look. Right now, I've just started the game, and as far as WOTR movement trays go, I've been adding a magnet to each hole and plasteel to the bottom of each base. This seems to work pretty well. So if I pick up a few WHF bases for "special" units, I will probably also put a magnetic sheet into the bottom so it is "compatible" with the rest of my collection.
Magnetizing is a big pain, but it isn't hard, and wow, it is so much better than having one's models fall all over the place (WOTR models seem to do this, maybe because they just don't weigh anything).
Anyhow, I digress. Thanks for the advice, which I am sure to use.

I have been doing this myself as well.
I got tired of trying to move a formation tray only to have to reset the figs once the tray was in place.
I cant recommend the practice enough.

ok here is one thing you can do. in the rule book it tells you what size those odd ball companies look like. some are 80mmx100mm some are smaller or bigger. The modular movement trays are perfect for this. Here are the materials you need.
1-modular movement trays w/ side lips to encase them in.
2-cardboard (not thick)
3-Hobby Knife
4-PVA Glue, Sand
5-Models
How to make custom bases:
1-Find out what size you need the tray to be
2-Cut tray out and glue sides together to encase the entire thing like you would for WFB
3-Cut out a piece of cardboard so it fits in the movement tray nice and snug and then once it fits superglue it in place.
4-Place models where you would like them to be on the bases and then mark it with a pen.
5-Cut out the circle and test fit the models (if they don't fit continue to trim.
6-Once everything fits nice and snug put PVA glue and base the tray and DONE.
7-Have fun!!!
The way that i have done this makes it look like a regular tray and look like the GW WoTR trays and the army will look unified.

What a great thread!
I say this because I'm looking for movement trays - for a game that doesn't use them.
Anyone have any suggestions where I can buy cheap trays? How expensive are the Game Workshop trays?
I've already put magnets on the bases of my Confrontation: Age of Ragnarok miniatures, so maybe I could use magnetic paint on the trays...
Once I find some cheap trays, that is! The LOTR ones seem pricey - and probably wouldn't be a good idea, since the base sizes might be different?
C:AoR uses 30 mm bases, 40 mm, 50 mm, 65 mm, and so on.

Litko Aerosystems, as stated above; also GW modular movement trays.
The WotR trays from GW come in two flavors- 8 infantry, for 20mm round bases, or two cavalry, for 40mm round bases.

Great tip on Litko Aerosystems. I always need TONS of bases, esp 40mm, and it's impossible to get enough from GW without spending out of my ears.
Awesome!

There is a great article on The One Ring on magnetising movement trays.
