Are chapter traits still around or did they die with the new codex. I have been looking around and all I can find about them is stuff 2007 or older.

They are completely and utterly gone, just like Guard doctrines.

Well that blows so if you don't want a bland chapter you have to take a named, use this color scheme chapter?

No, you can make any chapter you want. Also, Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists, Raven Guard, Salamanders, and White Scars all have special characters in the codex that confer special rules of some sort to the army.

How many chapters can you name, that don't already have books, that couldn't be accurately reflected with the choices in a vanilla dex? (including using the named characters as "count as" units)

I mean no, they won't, they don't need to, it's unneccessary.

What i mean is something like the black templars and all of those unmajor chapters that are well known like the black dragons and all that all have their codexs combined. Because their are at least 1/5 of the chapters do not follow the codex astrates.

From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.

I hope then don't come out with another SM codex till all of the other races get a codex (I.E. Dark Eldar)

I just would like to have the customization that the traits offered without having to be "Dark Angels" or "Salamanders" or some such.

Well, that's just you having a limited imagination...or are too stubborn to look at it from a different angle.

All you need is a foot note what rules you are using, and then call it anything.

CHAPTER STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE MARINES:
(Using Kantor as HQ, blah blah blah).

"Adapt or Die" is the saying right?
In addition... SM are not the only ones.

Eldar: no specific Craftworld rules.
Chaos SM: no specific Legion rules.
SM: no specific Chapter rules. (they do get chapter tactic, which is close enough).
Then they get SW: no specific clan within it...
Tyranids: they didn't have specific hive fleet rules before... they most likely won't have specific army lists now (they may have stuff akin to Chapter Tactics..then maybe not).

Etc...

I play chaos... we have to use our imagination when we play an army like 'Death Guard' or 'World Eaters'... I don't think it a problem if the loyalists have to do the same thing... hell, Chapter Tactics is a huge step in the right direction if you ask me.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I think they need to bring back the Index Astartes thing they did. Look it up. It had special rules for each of the first founding legions, both traitor and loyal. Minor FOC alterations, army wide special rules. It was a supplement that worked in conjunction with the C:SM codex at the time, and managed to give just enough flavor to some of the other chapters without needing a complete codex.
