Hi all...soo I've been tinkering with these two deathguard and wanted to put it out there to see what you guys thought of them. which do you think will do better against the current metagame?

LIST 1: Nurgzilla

HQ: 440 pts

with this list i have 4 big CC monsters will be hard to deal with all of them at the same time, 5 vehicles (decent armor saturation), and decent long range fire support...i figure balanced list should be able to handle most lists

with this list ill have 1 oblit squad and 2 LD squads in reserve to DS which will help this list be more tactically flexible than the first

First list:

Dps are ok.
GD: it’s the need for delivery that puts people off. Champions with gear are an important part of making the squads work in an all-comers environment.

Plague marine squad 1: decent (no need for second Tlbolter)
Plague marine squad 2: I do not suggest mixing special weapons.
Plague marine squad 3: are ok, but plasma squads sometimes are better off not approaching too closely, which counters the whole naked champ thing for the GD.
10 CSM are meh.
7 Lesser daemons: fluff is cool, but 7 lessers really don’t get you very much. 14 or bust if you want to be fluffy. 20 for best results, 10 is IMO the minimum to be a bit reliable.

Oblits are ok.
Defiler would like to be a pair.

In general your definition for Deathguard is pretty loose…IoCG/CSM, heavy mech.

Second list:

The defiler/oblit switch has pros and cons. I like more oblits personally.

yea ok well its not really straight DG i suppose...my fluff rationalization is that the CSM are a roaming warband seeking to become PMs...but little do they know they're actually gonna be eaten by the GUO! which i think is an entirely plausible scenario

anyhow...so you'd rank 3x2 oblits > 2x defilers, 2 oblits > 1 defiler, 2x2 oblits?

i run a mech heavy deathguard list that hasnt ever let me down. it dosnt follow the fluff of the army but with no benafit or even mention of sacred numbers in the codex it didnt bother me to much. I did try to stick to a pure plague marine army tho.

i have typhus with 5 plague marines in a land raider.
3 10 man plague marine squads 2 with duel plasma and 1 with duel melta all with champions with powerfists combi meltas and melta bombs. in rhinos
2 dakka preds

has worked really well for me so far.

i do like the 2 princes if you can keep them healthy for when they hit combat they hit hard. The greater daemon is nice toughness 6 is nothing to laugh at but then you have that random squad of normal marines out there. i like the 3 squads of oblits better they can drop templets as well with plasma cannons and you can drop them were you need them to rip up tanks if need be. over all it seems like a pretty solid list. let us know how it fairs at your first tourney.

Just because this codex doesn't mention that fluff, doesn't mean old fluff is thrown out. It still exists.

But, yes, you can call an entire army made up of Khorne Bezerkers, Death Guard... you'll just get funny looks...

As to Typhus: he is specifically a Renegade DeathGuard...not really 'Mortarion' DeathGuard.

I like/run 10 man too, though I name my guys differently. But 7 man squads prob. have the best economical return for points invested.
I personally favor Meltas, then flamers, then last would be plasmas.

As to hvy support...I use 2 squads of 3 oblits from 1675 up until 2000 points.
I throw a defiler in for the last hvy slot for kicks sometimes.

As to the ranking, if you want to run Defilers seriously, get two IMO. Oblits are great, but have their faults. One pays for their flexibility, which allows the troops to specialize.

the reason id rather have the GD pop out of a 2 plaz PM squad is that 2 plaz w/o fist champ is better than 2 melta or 2 flamer w/o fist champ...my GD is gonna be huge...as big as the FW GUO...so he'll have be to based on a 5 inch base which gives him quite a charge range...12inches rhino movement+2 inches from transport + 5 inches base + 6 inches charge = very possible 2nd turn assault

i think id rather have 3 oblit squads than 2 defilers and 1 oblit squad...i feel that i'll really need the lascannons to open up transports from long range. the BC just wont cut it...i guess ill play test 1 defiler if it gets consistent blown up too quickly then ill just swap him for an oblit squad

Most Greater Daemons are based on dreadnough sized bases. Official GW.
You can get away with Forge World if it's the actual model.

But a custom job.. I'd be iffy on the legality...but gaming wise...yea...huge deal.

If you go with that, the GD has much more influence and would be 'respectable' IMO.
But if we are talking about the dread sized base: meh.

@ sanctjud: haha well...its semi-custom. I'm using the FW plague hulk model to convert into a GUO. its belly is 3 inches in diameter so at the bottom he'll be equivalent to a FW GUO. im hoping that he'll be legal...i might make him with just a 4 inch base... ::shrug:: plus my DPs will be on dreadnought sized bases so the GD's gotta be bigger right?

anyhow heres a new list...with 6 oblits and a defiler! O_O it mixes special weapons (melta and flamers) i know...but id be relying on the oblits to pop transports and the meltas on the marines will be a last resort. and i'll have meltas dispersed throughout more of the army...
