With the new Nid codex coming out, I'm thinking about starting collecting them, and I have a couple ideas for bases. I was thinking about doing some long grass, almost to the top of the gaunts. Something similar to the raptors running around in the Jurassic Park movies. Any ideas on how to make the grass like that?

Woodland Scenics do some which is pretty good. You should find it in most good independant Hobby stores or Train Shops.
Have a look at the range here - http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/FieldGrass/

Thank you. Does it stand up well, or fall over easily? And about how much does each packet cover? Trying to guestimate costs for a horde...

You get a good sized amount. Each strand is about 2.5" long and the packs are pretty full. I reckon you could do about 60 models with totally covered bases (though I doubt you'd ever want that much)
They don't stand too freely, but a drop of PVA does the job most of the time. Each indivdual strand is about a hair width.

A customer actually had a really good idea last week... he let an old brush soak in the Devlan Mud wash for a while, let the wash dry on the bristles, then cut them off and used them as basing. Honestly, It looked rather good.
Not that great of an idea for doing a lot of models, though.

Ah, I've done something similar for my Guard Mortars. You don't actually seem to need to drop a lot on the base to make it look like they are wading through grass. Mine were an experiment for a more alien terrain, and playing with long grass in general. A few sprigs per base will do ya!
I still haven't figured out how to make them en masse, which is something I would be curious to hear about from those of you that might have more experience....

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular." |
