Skaven - look in the army book near the start, discussing the history of the skaven.
Not reall a rules question, I would post this in the more general discussion area if you want anything more in depth...

Best I can surmise is just a modification of the word "scavenger". But I haven't found any data on the actual origin of the name in a quick online search.

Which, by the way, is why I pronounce it "skaven" (like "scavenger") not "skAven" (like "crAven") like 99% of the warhammer players I've known ... - Salvage

I agree with salvage on pronounciation, although I call them Skaven, pronounced Sk-AH-ven, cant stand the Skayveners

Really?
I always said skay-ven, but I could see Sk-Ah-ven making sense.

Na its skay-ven. none o that english fixy fixit, high brow stuff now ya hear. or i'll start correcting your name as well. Slavage
on topic, there isnt a mention anywhere in any army book or the 'the loathsome Ratmen and all their kin' book. Salvage is probably right about the names origin but not the pronun-c-a-tion

I always thought the word Skaven was a play off of the word Craven. As Skaven are a twisted mirror image of humanity (plotting, power hungry, crazy technology) I thought this was commentary on the dark side of the human condition.
