If you buy, for example, a tactical squad and a drop pod, it is legal to deploy the tactical squad on the board initially (scenario permitting anyway) and then bring down the empty pod as usual.

-For the lulz?
Certainly there's a reason... but I'm sure it's not gonna be used like that very often.
But yes, you can drop pod empty pods, it's generally used to manipulate when you want more important passengers to come in: Turn 1 or Turn 2+.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Don't know how ofter it might be used, but a couple of reasons;
Block LOS to some important units,
Block an avenue of advance the enemy might use,
Place a locator beacon on the table to negate scatter for DSing units,
Disrupt your opponents careful plans by distracting him (her),
I'm sure there are more, but these are a few off the top of my head.

And because of the wording in the SM codex tactical squads can select both a drop pod AND a rhino/ razorback. There may be some games where having the option to either drop in or roll on might be useful, or even to drop in and have razorback fire support etc etc. Tactically SM do many manuvers that are strange, so there might be occasions where this makes sense; diverting enemy fire or just doing confusing SM type assaults.

@Time Wizard:
Your first two points there are covered by my 'Great Wall of AV 12' comment.
The third point is IMO uninteresing, DSing units want close, not in your own deployment zone.
Point three: I will not get into, only good vs. newbies IMO.

I don't think that is right, but I don't have a codex on hand.

The drop pod does not need to DS into a deployment zone, however.

I was talking about Tri's "BA deploying Pods on the table during deployment phase".
Not the first turn drop...and that's the only thing I've been addressing ever since the AV12 Great Wall comment..............

^^ Yes the tac squad dedicated transport entry is different to that of other squads.
It states; "May select a Rhino or a Razorback. If the squad numbers 10 models may take a Drop Pod."

But the rule would have to go on to say may take a drop pod in addition to other transports.
They rule is saying that you cannot take a drop pod if the squad numbers less than 10 models, not that a 10-man squad can take 2 dedicated transports.

Actually, the wording is really quite inclusive. As long as it doesn't say "Or", RAW does say that you can take a 10 man with a razorback and drop pod... then you combat squad them, and put the guns where they need to be.
The way it's written, a squad may have option A or option B. If the squad has 10 models, then it is given an additional option that is not neccasarily (sp?) exclusive to the previous options given.
It's a waste of points, but I vote it's legal.

Unless your 'drop pods' look suspiciously like entrenchments with little rockets on the bottom. Modelling for advantage can make even the silliest loophole useful.
I think I'll file this one in the "you're gonna get slapped" file, never to see the light of day. Legal? Yes. Stoopid? That too.

Black Templar units must DS in their pods and cannot start on the table.
Where in the BA PDF does it say they can start on the table?

It doesn't but it is missing they must start in reserves. If they don't have to start in reserves you may deploy them as normal

Correct. I have seen this used actually to create a Wall of AV12 armour while they shot at them with 3 Whirlwinds.
