Subject: Ogres? A couple of general questions

Hey there, this may not be the right place for this, and my apologies if not, but this is my first venture into the land of square bases...
I have an ogre army that I picked up a couple of years ago mostly because of the man eater models and I have been picking at it from time to time, building the models up in what is undoubtedly the least effective configurations but again, mostly just because I like how they look.
Okay, that being said, a lot of guys at my FLGS play fantasy and I have been thinking about taking those first few tentative steps back into a game I haven't played in a couple of editions.
First off, I know ogres are far from the "best" army out there but is it possible to at least be competitive? Also, are they fun to play and play against?
My second question is, does anyone know of any good resources for a new ogre player? I don't see a whole lot around here of the fatties, which I guess goes back to my first concern.
Thanks in advance for any pointers you might have.
I suppose if I get too frustrated I can put my round based daemons in movement trays, is that acceptable?
Thanks again.

All I know about Ogres and being competitive is the lists often revolve around multiple small units (with as many Iron Gut units of 3 as you can manage) lead by a Tyrant and supported by a bunch of Butchers and Gorgers. Beyond that, not much that I can think of.

The only true competitive list i've seen is a Skrag based Gorger army.
Basically the army has Skrag, 2-6 Gorgers and 3 more Butchers. Add MSU of Ironguts and you should be good to go.
Competitive and Ogre Kingdoms don't usually go hand in hand.
I'd do Ogres but the competitive side of me demands I take summit else.

Probably Nurgle, Africa has the lock on that.

I use Zap Brannigan's art of war and try to jam enough wreckage in their main cannon so it won't work. |

I was the last ogre player at my FLGS to finally move on, and while I like playing my ogres a lot - their speed, fear causing and high attaks are pretty awesome, as are the models and general character of the army - they became somewhat frustrating for me. I found I had pushed my army as far as I wanted to go, and wasn't really able to compete where I wanted to ... Which isn't saying that ogres aren't good or fun, because they are both. They just really are Tier 3, which makes it hard to butch up when you want to take on the harder guys. Check out the Ogre Stronghold for loads of ogre advice, and to see some really dedicated gamers pushing the book or at least sticking with it. - Salvage

From my experiance with ogres the lower the point value of the game, the more effective the army is. Being extremely elite other armies simply cannot deal with them at low point levels. However once you get to 1500+ I've found that they begin to take more losses then wins.

This, but also with Butcher Spam.
By Taking lots of Butchers, and maybe a Tyrant, you can field a pretty good list, but it will be focused mainly around Ironguts.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Okay great, thank you all! And thanks for that link to the Ogre Stronghold, I will go read some batreps and stuff.
Thanks again, I absolutely love the models and none of my regular group plays much Fantasy so I will probably just tinker with them a bit and get in games at the game store as I paint them up.
At least they seem pretty fun to play.

Oh they are fun for sure.
If your group isn't WAAC, you should be fine.

If they go WAAC I will just put my 40k daemon army in movement trays and make them cry ;-)
