Is using the "count-as" rule considered cheesy? From most account I hear that looted wagons are awful but I like the concept a lot. Especially from a model perspective. I have an old 2e Baal Predator that I was hoping I could convert into an orky deff wagon but I would prefer to have it be a battlewagon rather than just a looted wagon (so as to get some practical use out of it).

Some would argue (and I might be included in that number) that using a tichy tiny rhino to represent a vehicle that can transport 20 troops might be a wee stretch. Using a land raider or something with a larger 'footprint' would be more acceptable imo. This is assuming you're talking about playing strangers or in a competition, if not, just talk to your friends about it.

It would look horrible if you field like 7 identical battlewagons, but ofc they must be kinda the same size, I think none whines about making battlewagon out of looted tanks.

Yeah, a rhino is too small to seriously count as a BW. But a rhino with an extended and raised hull (e.g. a pair of wheels in front of the tracks like the official BW model, plus a big turrt on top) could be fine. You'll get few complaints if your conversion is about the same size as the official model.
