Subject: Tank shocking after moving?

Is there anything stopping me from moving into a good tank shock position before declaring a tank shock? For example, is it possible to move 2 inches forward, pivot, and then tank shock 4 inches forward? Or do you have to declare that you are tank shocking before moving at all?

You declare tank shock, distance, and direction before any movement

Yes you have to declare the number of inches you are moving before measuring for tank shock.

Thanks for the replies. Is it possible then to move after the tank shock? Eg. I would declare a 4 inch tank shock, finish the tank shock, and then pivot and move 2 inches in a new direction. Also, could you point me to the rule that says I have to tank shock before moving at all?

jcage, I believe what you are looking for is on pg 68 of the BRB.
The rule states that "when moving a tank, the player can declare the the vehicle is going to attempt to make a tank shock instead of moving normally."
Moving on, the rule then states "to make this attack, turn the vehicle on the spot in the direction you intend to move it and declare how many inches the vehicle is going to move."
So to answer your questions, you have to tell your opponent that you are attempting to tank shock, thus you must do it before the vehicle moves. The second paragraph answers your other question about being able to move other places before tank shocking. Hope this helps

Your semi-right there Olso... You do have to move at least combat speed meaning that you cannot just pivit or perform a stationary tank shock, you actually have to move, but that is splitting hairs.

I have a similar question. After tank shocking, are you free to pivot (so long as the center point of your vehicle doesn't move)?
p57 regarding vehicle movement says "Pivoting on the spot alone does not count as moving ..."
p68 regarding tank shocking says "no other changes of direction are allowed during a tank shock."
The argument I've heard is that the rules don't (that I can see) explicitly state that movement ends after the tank shock is done and so you're still free to pivot after.

When declaring inches, do you have to declare the minimum inches that will reach the unit? Or can you just declare the maximum amount the vehicle can move and still get it if the unit is in the vehicles path?

If you declare you are making a tank shock, you have to guess the distance first and decide if you want to do it. If you are not sure if you are withing striking distance, then the tank shock is failed, but still happens.
So if you declare you are tank shocking 6" (what you think it will take), and the unit is 7" after measuring, then the tank shock fails but still happens.
It is a good rule of thumb (at least for me) to declare I'm tank shocking my full available movement (usually 12"). I don't want to come up short so this is the way I do it.
You can't measure, see that its 7", and then declare a tank shock. It's guess, declare, measure, then follow through with it.
Thats probably way more info then you needed. Sorry.

You perform a tank shock instead of moving normally. That means that the tank's entire movement is the tank shock, and would therefore be covered by the "during a tank shock" clause.

Yup, there's no pivot available there.
As a general note, the mechanic of stating distance moved as a guess is as much about guessing short of troublesome terrain or other vehicles as it is range to target. I've seen lots of people dispense with the guess part entirely and just move too, declaring tank shock as they go (and other people let them )
