Hey i'm just startin and cant decide wat army . I was thinkin Eldar,Dark Angels,Chaos Spacemarines,or possibly Necrons...pls help!



(Okay after ALOT of consideration I've decided on Chaos Spacemarines...now I have to decide on paint schemes and such.great.)

It depends what you want to do, really.

Eldar is about specialization. Most of their units do one thing really well, so you have to make sure you've got the others to cover all your rock-paper-scissors bases.

Dark Angels probably isn't a good idea right now, as they have a fairly old codex which is blown away by the new vanilla SM one. Although, straight up Ravenwing and Deathwing armies are supposedly still viable, although if you want to do something Terminator heavy, you can go Space Wolves as well.

Chaos Space Marines are what I'd recommend to you. MEQs are fun, and CSMs lend themselves to tons of great modeling and painting opportunities.

I would warn you to stay away from Necrons. I won;t say that they're broken, but they have en extremely old codex, and are in serious need of an update. The rules they have are convoluted, and are not good for a new player just learning the ropes.

Hey there. This question comes up a lot and all it really comes down to is "Which one had your favourite models"

If you're just starting, have your friends/people you play with been playing long either. I doubt you'll be planning to enter any big tournaments soon, and probably just playing with the first models you buy, so 'Which is the most competitive' is probably the wrong question.

I agree with Endova, though. Eldar and Necrons are the more complex of the two, and if you want to get into/learn the game quicker, Dark Angels and Chaos Marines are the way forward.

But at the end of the day, have a look at the codexes in the store, and pick the one you like the look/background of.

How about you list the stuff you like about each one, that way we can figure it out based on the one that sounds like you like it the most.

Do you want to win games? Because if yo do then I would go with CSM. The other codices are on the weaker side of the armies. The Eldar and Necrons are at the bottom. Necrons got a huge nerf in 5th ed and Eldar also got a big nerf which is being followed up by a suckerpunch by IG.

Endova mentioned why not to do Dark Angels, however I am pretty sure no one cares if you actually use that chapter but with the vanilla space marines codex if you are a fan of their fluff and colors.

Then you can always use their rewrite book if it ever is to come out.

You should definately go with the one you think looks the coolest first and foremost. Assuming then that these are the armies you think all look cool, I would personally say, go with Eldar. Marines are terribly overplayed and everyone generally builds their lists to battle marines (which necrons may as well be, being almost exactly the same statistically). Being something different (orks, eldar, guard, sisters, tau, daemons, 'nids or whatever) you add more to the game, and get to throw most players a curve ball by making them face something they're not used to.

If you hate painting go necrons, they can have a nice paint job with only 3-4 colors.

If money is an issue disregard my previous idea and go DA or CSM. They are very strong powerful units that don't cost that much money wise compared to other armies.

But if you choose an army with a horrible codex it will make you that much happier when gw finally gets around to you.

This is true! The vanilla Space Marines just got a new codex, and are very competitive, and have to be like, 95% similar to Dark Angels. DA lends itself to many cool conversions, especially if you use their upgrade bitz pack. I didn't mean to discourage you from using one of the cooler chapters out there, looks and fluff wise. It can be a little confusing for new players using substitute codices, is all.

Vanilla in gaming term means plain / normal / generic.

So basic Space Marines in the Space Marine codex , not the other Chapters.

Your best bet is to spend some time reading the threads around here, and reading up on the lore of the different races. You could play to win games and go for the most finely tweaked army lists you can find, or you can just collect whatever seems most fun to you and take your time painting and converting whichever race you find most appealing.
