Howdy folks,

Im very excited to have just gotten some DH models to ally with my IG army. Played a game against my brother's space wolves this evening and some questions came up, hope somebody can help or point me in the right direction:

1) Does a drop pod count as a deep striking unit? I dont have a SM codex, but my brother looked in his and he said that it doesnt say explicitly that they deep strike, just that they adopt the ruleset for deep striking. (We rolled off since we werent sure and I lost, so was unable to fire at his drop pods as they dropped on my IQ Lord + mystics).
1a) If we are incorrect and you CAN shoot at drop podders... do you take a shot at the drop pod itself (and if you blow it up, you damage the units inside as if they were inside an exploded vehicle?) Or do you let the enemy place the drop pod and disembark and then shoot at the unit coming out of the drop pod. If its the latter, it seems like they could take advantage of the drop pod to manipulate LOS to disallow you to shoot them.
2) Can I take a land raider as a dedicated transport for the IQ lord + retinue? (If so, wow.. thats all I need in the middle of my LRBTs, a fricken land raider haha).
3) Whats with the hate for the vindicare assassins? Ive been reading about them and most people are not impressed. If I read the rules right... you might be able to pick off an important IC or something with marksman... use the special rule to negate invulns. The special ammo that does 3d6 against vehicles armor also seems like it could be worthwhile. Coupled with infiltration and how difficult it is to shoot at these guys and youd think theyd find an easy time earning back their points. Will play with them some more and if theyre not working out, considering trying out daemonhosts... They seem pretty randomly awesome, but not sure yet.

4) Do you guys think theyll be updating the codex ever or is this a dead army? If they do, do you think that theyll keep (or enhance) the allies rules? Hope so.

Anyways, its late. Some questions I had after my game. Apperciate anyones thoughts, I will check back here and continue to search the interwebs for answers too.

Thanks.

1. Yes. The DH Faq says you can shoot at either the drop pods, or the marines when they disembark.

1a. They get to disembark first - take a look at the faq.

2. Yes yes! Just remember, the upgrades you can get from the armory and limited, so you can't get anything nice like Psycannon bolts.

3. 6 turn game, 5 hits, 2.5 wounds. You cab squeeze a little more, but not much, out of the special rounds. There aren't really any important ICs it'll kill. Maybe you can use him to pick off squad sergeants when they have nice weapons (because no targeting restrictions apply, you can even fire into a melee). Try him out, see if he's worth it - I personally never use anything but the Callidus.

4. It's rumored that the new codex is being written. A lot of people say Allies is more than a little cheesy, so they might take it out - but as a Guard player, I hope they don't.

But, in reality, it just ends up with things that aren't really meant to be (Land Raiders in IG, like you said, or plasma guns that are cheaper than they should be, terminators for IG, psychic hoods for IG, etc).

I think I had two straight games with the unlikely misfortune of not being able to wound anything with a Vindicare assassin, and I have since decided that I should probably dismiss him from service.

Seconding makr on this one; I have never employed an Officio Assassinorum Callidus assassin that was not able to repay the price I paid for their services in the blood of mutants and heretics.

Honestly as far as the Vindicare goes, again, it depends on the player. Ive had some pretty serious hurt brought on by a Vindicare in the past. When I used to play CSM. Id get the aspiring champions taken out, and either A. not get the awesome power weapon attacks, or B. lose in CC and my marines would fail LD test (thats my luck tho lol) I would get pinned all the time by the friggin thing.
Look up some tactics online for them, there are some really neat ones. Something Ive always thought was cool, was you can shoot your own minis. So say, youve got a squad in CC and they are just STUCK in with something else. Your losing, but only slowly. So you use the Vindicare to take out key guys in your unit, and they lose CC. Now that opens up the chance for the rest of your army to pour mountains of fire into the opponents unit.
Just check um out, they can be used rather nicely.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts. Being able to shoot at the dropped pods makes the mystic even better.

Im not sure if Id take the land raider because of how pricy they are, and to be honest the IQ Lord and his retinue is not some sort of beat squad that i want to ram down peoples throats. Definitely cool that I have the option though (It would totally piss off all the marine players i play haha).

I feel stupid asking this, but is there some central repository for the FAQs? I tried searching on yahoo and on the games workshop site, youd think this would be something fairly obvious to find online but... -_-

Thanks again.

Yea the FAQ is some what hidden on their site. Heres the link

Enjoy man. Also, landraiders are pricey, but they are easily worth their points. Specially playing against Orks. Those are some serious bad ass tanks

That is some BS... allies rules... utter trash...

IG already have access to enough stuff. They don't need access to extra army's wargear and troops!

I'm curious, why the hate? It makes perfect sense fluffwise and doesnt do anything unbalanced. What's the issue?

Honestly, the Daemonhunters codex is so antique that allying with IG is about the only way for that army to have a chance in hell of winning.

Yes, why the hate. You still have to pay points and use FOC- slots for the allies. Its not like they are free or anything.

trying to impress us with his first post maybe?

OT
i know that an Eldar player i played against one time was surprised that the =I= psychic didn't work the same as the SM one did. it has better range apparently. i personaly still like the =I= with 2 mystics parked next to a Demolisher (or similar nasty tank). i haven't tryed out the Assassins yet.

If you want some good advice on using assassins then you could always refer to the tactica that are sometimes posted on Bell of Lost Souls.

The Vindicare one is here:
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2007/03/tactica-vindicare-assassin.html

The Callidus one is here:

There is an inquisitor retinue building one but I can not find it at this time.. Check it out though.

Demolisher? Par for the course. I once went the full route in Apocalypse. You should have seen the face of the Demon player when my Baneblade started taking pot shots at his little buggers .

To the OP, I always field an inquisitor lord and assassin with my IG army and almost all the time with my SM army.

I started with running a vindicare assassin but was really underwhelmed by what he was able to accomplish. Nowadays I always use a calidus assassin.

The calidus gets the special rule "a word in their ear" which allows you to move one enemy unit up to 6 inches after deployment but before the start of the game. This can be very useful for moving an important piece of the enemy's army out of cover, or into possible charge range of a fast unit or an infiltrator. If you put the emperor's tarot on your inquisitor you can get a better chance to get the first turn and take good advantage of your calidus' ability.

The calidus can also appear anywhere on the field when he deploys out of reserves and can charge the turn you put him in allowing you to attack a weak or important part of your enemy's backfield.

As far as inquisitor's retinue goes, the 2 mystics are a given. I also take 3 gun servitors, 2 with heavy bolters and one with a plasma cannon. I also put a psycannon on my inquisitor. This unit then becomes a nice little firebase that can sit and effectivly shoot enemy units from 36 inches out. They can also put a real hurt on anything deep striking to close.

Whiskeybent is my brother, he was just talking trash dont mind him! =)

Very cool will look at the tacticas.

Is there any other wargear you guys find yourself using?

And have you guys tried out daemonhosts instead of assassins for your elite choice? They seem to have fun rules and great stats... only problem would be getting instadeathed by a power first or something.

Well, the great internet consensus is that demonhosts are for "fun only". The abilities are random ( never a good idea ) plus they are vulnerable to Instant Death.

Never bothered with a Daemonhost. Some things are so bad (even on paper) that there is no reason to ever actually run them. I'm sure I'll catch a half-dozen people flaming me for saying that. Giving lovely anecdotes about this one time, at band camp, they ran one, and it killed 15 Grots aond won them the game, etc. But it's true... despite the one time at band camp, they're still not worth ever using.
