It's come to my attention that devastator units are solely their heavy-weapon designation, i.e; in a devastator squad of 10, 5 will be tactical marines, (pulled from another squad/reserve/designation) to add some faster firepower, 4 will be devastators, still learning the ropes and being forced to learn the make and kind of every weapon they will ever use during their career as a space marine, and the veteran sergeant.

Then in a tactical squad of ten men, the specialist (flamer or plasma gun) will be a step up from his cohort while the heavy weapons unit will be a step up from a devastator, and is about to turn to a marine.
What do you think?

opinions would be nice, but nothing stupid please.

As far as I knew, the bolter-wielding members of a Devastator Squad, according to the Codex, are simply Battle-Brothers who've just moved up from the Scout Company and simply aren't experienced enough to be trusted with a heavy weapon... yet...

that's stupid because they can get heavy bolters as a scout? and snipers, I imagine snipers are very finneky.

You make a good point Solon, but in my opinion, if you look at the Scout HB versus the Devastator HB, the scouts' looks much simpler and more "low-tech."

As for sniper rifles... I'd explain that by the fact that it simply fits with the roles scouts take on, more than a tactical squad.

To be honest, the whole progression of a Space Marine doesn't make a lot of sense.

The thing is, is to try and not read TO much into the fluff of how things work. The overall fluff of the game is pretty cool, but when they get all technical on how things happen and why, it gives you more "uh..... why would that happen?" moments then "OH AWESOME!"

According to fluff, 1 SM can kill 10k Orks, has multiple lungs/organs, that protect them from pretty much anything, breathe under water, breathe toxic gases, their skin produces some weird slime that makes them pretty much flame retardant (yet they still die by flamer templates, go figure) they can spit acid, eat their enemies and learn from their flesh and blood! And the list goes on.

Yet in the game, they are literally NONE OF THOSE THINGS! 1 Sm against 10k orks, would be over in half a second. Again, flamers nuke SM the same way they nuke a grot (though not as easily) I hope you guys are getting the point here. So trying to figure out the whos and whats for some SM in a devastator squad, just ask yourself, why the hell would I field a full 10 man dev squad? They shoot long distance, and kill things, when something assaults them, they die. Dont waste points on regular marines in a dev squad. Shoot man, just give the Sgt 2 ccw so he can kill something before being butchered.

Without addressing the complete stupidity of scale, logistics and military strategy in 40k (spoiler: nothing really works!) the progression of a SM doesn't make sense either. In modern militaries, the guys doing recon/sniping/long patrols are the best trained and hardest soldiers, not the new guys. Really, SM chapters would never be able to recruit full battle brothers, because you can't put new recruits (even ones picked for excellence and then genetically-modified) through multiple campaigns in the most risky and demanding role possible, and expect any of them to survive.

You can't put a tactical marine through that either.

They will never
Repeat:
never remove their power armour.

If you want a scout he needs to be in carapace.

anyway, he first has to become a hardened veteran, and he'd still have a sergeant.

and risky?

whats risky?!

it's such a demanding job just being a SM.

Yet space wolves scouts are some of the most hardened veterans in the whole great company, whom i might add, were tactical marines that took off their power armour

why is it when I'm talking about SM, SWs always attack it with their differing logics.

SPACE WOLVES ARE NOT NORMAL SPACE MARINE CHAPTERSYSTEMS.

THEY HAVE 13 F**KING COMPANIES.

Of course they have 13 companies, not everyone thought Gullimen(sp?) was the smartest guy to run things. How many Black Templars companies are there? A billion? 2 billion??

Seriously this kind of fluff is dangerous to your health my man

Besides it makes slightly less sense after they changed it. Before they would go straight to Tactical. If they were good with the heavy weapons, they'd go to Devistators. If they were good at assault they would go to the Assault Marnine squads. The bolter marines in the squad are simply there to provide covering fire, as they will draw a lot of attention and need it. They handle the little problems while the heavy weapon guys fire at the armour further away. In game terms they don't work that way, but that's what they were like.

Gulliman would be rolling in his stasis pod if he knew about the Black Templars not enjoying his book. Or has he finally died?
