I was thinking of making a City Fight board that would attach to my Realms of Battle. So, I know the size and thickness of the boards I need. But I don't know nothing about wood.. What type of material should I buy, I have seen in the past some wood start to warp and splinter, that is the last thing I want. Any of you wood workers out there got any suggestions??

you want MDF (medium density fiber board) it is sturdy, wont splinter, and doesn't warp. It is also easy to shape into smooth curves that dont require filler like plywood does.

way too much

Personally, I'd use high density insulation foam to make modular table squares out of. Typically pink, and comes in big sheets 4'x8'.

As suggested above, I'd use 1/4" MDF as the base, and then insulation foam to actually make the board. I just finished doing something similar. See here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/255537.page

Never use MDF that stuff is foul. Use Pink/Blue Insulation board or 1/4" Ply with a 1X2 frame instead.

I have to say that MDF is not something that you want to be using as a spice on your meals every night, but is totally ok for making gaming boards out of. My groups boards were made of foam and after moving them around from meeting to meeting, they got pretty beat up. We are now working on a new set of boards made from MDF. Just don't start doing lines of the dust, and you will be fine.

Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

That takes care of a lot of the problem but any exposed MDF should be Painted or primed as it out-gasses for years. True, using MDF in a hobby capacity will have a negligible effect health-wise but it's good to be aware of the risks. In the last few years I have seen MDF being using in construction (in Vancouver BC) for everything; Mouldings, Doors/Jambs, non-Structural Posts/Columns etc.. These new houses are full of that stuff imagine gassing your family with Formaldehyde for the next 10 years. /rant

Well I assumed that in the process of making the terrain it would be primed. And it is such a small amount it should be negligible effects.
