Subject: First foray into Fantasy, Have a battle force. Where too?

As the topic states I have started into fantasy. Probably foolishly but alas I was tempted. So I bought the battle force for the Warriors of Chaos. Some of my friends at the FLGS told me that it was a decent battle force and you would end up using most of the units, unlike some of the others in 40k where they contain squads of junk you dont need.
So I bough that and a Khorne Lord because he is badass looking. I kinda regret that decision though because it seems the majority of people put him on mounts and mine sadly does not have one.
So my question is where do I go from here? How do I expand this army in a way Im not throwing my money away? Is my poor Khorne lord useless?
A few more questions.
Is it worth giving the Marauders the flail?
Is it worth giving the Knights the Lances or do I stick with swords and shields?
What are some common outfits for these choices and what do I shy away from in the army book?
Thanks for any and all help!

Yes, Marauders with flails are pretty good. It depends on what you want out of the unit, but I take mine with flails.
Stick to Swords and Shields with Knights.
Common Outfits for Marauders are a unit of 10 with Mark of Khorne and Flails. 2 S5 attacks each is pretty nasty.
Knights are deadly regardless of what you put on them (However, do not put on the banner. This is a waste of points)
The only real unit to shy away from are Forsaken. They have little purpose in the book and they can be easily matched by Chaos Warriors.

My mate has a unit of knights with MoK and lances, its a pretty nasty unit but his face goes all gloomy when he loses them.
Yes flails seem to be pretty destructive too.

The thing about lances is that after the charge you lose the bonus, whereas ensorcelled weapons allow you to keep S5 until their finally dead.

Your Khorne Lord (yes, the ones on foot are awesome models) is far from useless! Just use him as an Exalted Hero, give him some basic magic gear and stick him in a unit of Warriors or Chosen to add a lot of stopping power.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I like the battleforce. Looking at my army, I sometimes wish I got 2! would have saved me some coin.
For the Khrone Hero on foot, you can take advantage of him not having a mount by giving him somethings that work better (or only) on foot. If you're prepared to make him Stupid (rule), the Helm of Many Eyes and a Great Weapon seems quite nice, giving out many S7 attacks even if you're charged.
Personally, I don't mind the banner on knights. I actually have found Khorne knights a bit of a liability, so I'm running mine MoT, Banner, Blasted, for some protection against shooting who is joined by my BSB.
I'm thinking of going MoS (for reliability, and it's cheap), Warbanner for my others, more expensive but you get a lot more control. Their good defence and +2 static CR mean they can cause quite a hit.
One annoying thing about the WoC model range is there's no Exalted/Chaos Lord type models on a standard Chaos Steed! I made one out of a The Green Knight, but it would have been nice to have.

The real issue IMO with lances is that they cost 5 points more per If it were a straight swap - and it really ought to be - than it might be conceivable, but as is, I think khorne knights are about the only dudes I'd suggest them on, because those guys are going to plan to explode through combat anyway, not look for S5 in a following round.
I say flails on marauders too. You might try them en masse, but I do support little bait and flank units: 10 marauders w/ musician, flails = 54 pts (!)
I keep talking about taking 20 marauders w/ full command + gw, but have yet to try it out ...

Wow thanks for the input! One more question though, is it worth it to throw in musicians into any of these?
Also what's a full command?

I find it's generally useful for all units to have a musician if they can. However, I don't play chaos so don't take that as the be all and end all. Full command is a term used for upgrading a unit to have a champion, musician and standard bearer.

In game terms, most units can take command, which consists of a standard bearer, some form of unit champion, and a musician. Each of these give bonuses as described in the BRB. And yes, I would throw a musician on almost every unit in the Chaos Army, as they'll be spending plenty of time in combat. P.S. Which Khorne Hero, BTW? The one with the Axe and flail-thing? Because if so, that model reeks of win.

This is the guy I bought. Has the axe and the sheild. I have him posed a bit differently though. I saw the guy with the flail on there though and he is a badass.

I've got a unit of 6-9 (!) ready to go, and plan to run a 6-man forsaken flanker / rampager unit @ 2250. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes They're so cheap in points, and just about the only truly new unit in the book, that I can easily justify giving them a shot. I've tried comparing them to warriors but the comparison falls apart quickly. 10 warriors w/ MoK & ahw (190 pts) is as close as you can legally get, but while they are better in WS (5>4), I (5>4), A (3+1>D3+1) and Sv (4>5), they are also much slower (4<6) and much more expensive (190 min vs 90 min). Essentially, they're not serving the same purpose really, even if the idea of tossing forsaken headlong into the enemy seems like a good idea at some point Daba wrote:Personally, I don't mind the banner on knights. IMO a knight unit that isn't frenzied should probably have a banner + musician if you intend to do anything serious with it. They're relying on generating CR to win, and having a little static to start with will always be good. thekerrick wrote:One more thing, how would you recommend equipping my Khorne Lord on foot? A good place to start: Exalted - MoK, shield = 130 He's pretty simple and quite effective at his job, with a good save and great combat stats. Depending on your points you could give him a ward (collar for MR(2) too), a better shield (enchanted shield for a 1+ armor), or a magic weapon (sword of might for S6 is classic), or a variety of other cool things - bloodcurdling roar is always worth the points. Basically, I'd say slap down his minimum kit first, then see what points you have left to work with to trick him out. He's great as is too - Salvage
