Ok I have some slight confusion on straight regrouping and being assaulted while falling back (forced regroup test). I've read through the rulebook and it states on page 47 that...
"A unit falling back can attempt to regroup by taking a leadership test (with the appropriate modifiers) at the start of its movement phase so long as:
1. It has left at least 50% of its original strength.
2. There are no enemies within 6".
3. The unit is in coherency."
So if i have 10 guardsmen acting as a single unit and 6 of them die in a shooting phase they are basically done for in the game. Because they can't regroup since they have less than 50% so I just roll 2D6 each turn for them until they run to my spawn zone edge? Also they are not allowed to regroup with another unit as they pass by?
Second questions is on the assaulted while falling back. Tonight while playing my 12 year old and his Chaos SM army his Berserkers killed 6 of my imperial guards (2 in shooting 4 in assault), i failed the moral and when i rolled 2D6 it was 7 inches. So on the next turn he moved 6 inches (within 2 inches of my guys) he shot then assaulted again. It states on page 48 under the "assaulted While Falling Back" section that "A unit that is assaulted whilst falling back must check to regroup immediately, before any charging models are moved......If succesful the unit regroups and will fight the close combat normally. If it fails to regroup then the unit is scattered and destroyed."
When a unit has 4 out of 10 guys left thats less than 50% so regroup is impossible thus rendering them destroyed correct?
Also since he moved 6 inches, shot, then assaulted (being he is 2 inches from my guardsmen) it refers to rule #2 stating that there are enemies within 6 inches thus making it regrouping not possible. Or does the assaulted while falling back not contradict this rule since you cant assault unless within 6 inches......am I making sense?
Also when a unit is retreating is the "nearest players edge" my army spawn zone edge?? or nearest table edge?

For the first question, yes, if they have no way to rally (I don't know if you can give them an order or something), once they fall below 50% and they are falling back, they will continue to fall back until they run off the board. You cannot join another unit unless you have a special rule that allows for your units to combine. One of the earlier ork codices had a rule like this, but to my knowledge, no one has a rule like that currently.
For assaulting, the morale check supercedes the three restrictions placed on them. They will always attempt to rally when they are assaulted.
As far as the last question, I believe it is referring to the closest table edge controlled by the player who is falling back. I don't have my brb with me at work, but I'm almost 100% sure that's what it says/means.
Also, you can still shoot while you are falling back, don't forget to try to take a few of the bad guys with ya!
EDIT: Clarity.

1. Yes, the unit keeps falling back to your board edge. It can fire though while falling back, so it may still be useful... though typically not.
2. The rule for assaults overrides the unable to regroup. Assaulting falling back units isn't typically a smart idea unless they have means to regroup. He should have just let you run yourself off the board.
3. Him being in assault range doesn't stop you from doing your morale check when assaulted, or it's never be possible to do the check the rule says to do
4. Pg 45 BRB you fall back to your own table edge via the shortest route possible. Once you touch the table edge the unit is destroyed.

One thing I thought of...(just getting used to playing by points with a limited number of turns and just just annihilation unlimited turns heh) If its based off points and there are only 1 or two more turns left wouldn't assaulting be a good idea to grab those kills cause if you assault a falling back unit and they fail their moral test then they are terminated. So you could score a few more points before game end. Yeah?

Yes. QQ more. Or play Space Marines -Shrug-
Of course, the solution is to not fall back in the first place

If you have a Company Command Squad in range, they can order an under-strength unit to regroup. It's great at saving kill points.

Actually, no. Since units that are falling back at the end of the game counts as destroyed it is totally unnecessary. Better go charge something else

It depends. Many races have some way to regroup when regrouping is impossible:
SM: ATSKNF
IG: "Get Back in the Fight" order
Eldar: Comming within 12" of the Avatar
Tyranids: Entering Synapse
I'm sure there's more, too. You can't always count on a broken unit being a kill point.
Also, remember that falling back units can still shoot their guns. Killing a Terminator with a single "out of the game" guardsman is always a hoot.

Ah ok, good to know guys. I wasn't sure if they counted until they were destroyed off board edge. Because if you really think about this it should be arguable due to the fact if they are charged there is an opportunity to regroup therefore They shouldn't really count as destroyed but more like immobilized or something.
