I could have posted this in a number of other forums but will see how it goes down with the consensus on rules first.
So, I want to put 3,500 points of IG on the table. My army has 3 platoons of 25 men, 4 squads of 10 vets and 3 heavy weapon squads each with 3 HW teams. (Around 130 models).
We are playing Apocalypse and I want first turn so want to bid a quicker deployment time than my opponent. (He is playing Orks with a green tide so is also fairly horde heavy). I practiced doing some different deployments and figured it would be a lot easier to move them around on bits of card.
So after I cut out some thick card movement trays it occurs to me that I can leave them on the card and actually deploy them on to the board that way.
This cuts my time to deploy to a fraction of what it is if I stand each model on its own. So what do you think? I am playing at home so it's not like a tournament but how would others feel if they had this done to them, OK or not OK?
I haven't yet asked my opponent but can see some cool extra modelling opportunities here.

I don't see how it could possibly be a problem.

If your opponent didnt have the common sense to do this as well its his fault. Good idea, i wouldnt mind.

Problem is, in urban boards, they might not fit throught the narrow ways, and they alsmo might not fit in buildings, but in open fields, there is no reason you shouldn't do it. OK.

Thanks for your input, I will now have a go at making them look a bit more than just pieces of card. Point taken about urban spaces, my first effort will be for open grassland. Maybe I can do reversable boards as they have no edges. If i get some photos I'll post them on painting & modelling forum.

If you made them fun might work. Real good for guard that fight in ranks, like Mordians.

from what i hear a lot of people use the WOTR movement trays for this very idea.
supposedly they work well with 40k bases.

just painted up my first set. Did an ochre and green on one side with a stippled grey on the reverse. Keeping them as flat card means I can stack them and flip them. Posting pics on P&M as soon as they dry.

WOTR trays work just fine with 40k models. The bases are the same, whether they're infantry or larger 40mm bases. I think more people don't use them because the models are crowded together in neat rows. I find them faster to place and move units.

A secondary use for them is painting. I find the models easier to paint when I have 1 tray of models waiting and another tray ready to hold the freshly painted while they wait to dry.

Just my 2 cents.

I'd never complaign about my opponent putting his squads in nice, tight little formations where my blast and flamer templates can get max coverage. In fact, I recommend that everyone out there goes ahead and puts their units on movement trays, they work really well, and look spiffy...

Seriously, I don't have a problem with it. And the modeling opportunities sound good. I'm wondering about it myself, as a way of making it easier to take my daemons from 40K to fantasy. If the WOTR trays will actually hold 40K round bases just fine, then I'm going to give them a try myself. Then figure out a way to cheaply model up about another 100 horrors...

Can I get an AMEN brutha!!!

Seriously though, why give your opponent the ability to kill more of your men just because you can set up a little bit faster? Just practice putting them out and if you are playing an ork horde then let the fastest model chucker win! :-P

Although it doesn't have to do with movement during the game, this may help: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/263460.page

It can definitely help when moving a big army, or you could use your same idea except with magnets making it easier to keep your models from being vulnerable to templates and allow you to interchange different models.

The first time I saw this was at my first GT, back in 2001.

Yes, lots of people use movement trays for 40k too, to speed deployment and movement. Gale Force Nine makes some, though they’re not the only company which does so.
