I put in a pre-order for this guy the day it was announced, received it a little over two weeks ago, and finished it up today...

The paint matrix for the wings...

I decided that rather than do a simple up-down blend, I was going to blend both from dark to light, moving away from the body, as well as from green to turquoise from the top to the bottom of the wings. This involved doing a decent amount of custom mixing prior to even starting the painting, and used up all my empty paint pots. The only colours involved are snot green, hawk turquoise, black and white.

Beautiful work on the wings- I don't like the way they are on the model, but the paintjob is amazing- I'd love to be able to blend the colours so seamlessly like that.

I have to say I think Zarakynel is the best-looking Daemon Lord in your collection, but the Lord of Change's colour scheme really brings out the hidden detail in the model.

Amazing work.

Nice work, though I think his skin could use a bit more depth... it looks like it's only 1 flat colour.

The wings are gorgeous but his skin looks like raw chicken. Realistic bird skin doesn't really fit with those fantastical wings.

The skin colours are pretty subtle, they're easier to make out in person. I was going for an old look to the skin, so it's washed mostly with greys. They fade it down okay, but they don't really get a lot of contrast, especially when you view it at a distance. I'm not really sure if there's a good way to correct that.

I agree with SRM. The wings, staff and details are all very nice, but the skin is just bleh.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I have to agree with the crowd here...

The model is gorgeously painted, but something about the skin is just off when viewing it as a whole.
Maybe a really thinned down blue or sepia wash would help it pop?

The wings are superb, I love the blending. I kinda like the white robe better than blue, but that's personal preference I guess.

The skin though just looks too flat from a distance. It's realistic, he really does look kinda like a plucked chicken, but that might not be the best look.

Very nice paint job, indeed! Sadly, though, it really doesn't change my low opinion of the underlying model...

But the paint job is quite nice. The transition of the colors on the wings, in particular, is very well done.

Agreed, the skin needs a little more "pop"

I was rather let down when Forgeworld released this model. I guess my expectations are too high?

Your paintwork is looking very good but the model itself looks unfinished.

But it's not meant to pop. Bird skin doesn't pop. I mean, it's an intentional decision in that regard. When I set out to paint the model, I thought about going with some sort of bright daemonic coloured skin, but I've seen a lot of pictures of them where they're portrayed with bird skin under their plumage.

So before I started painting, I actually spent sometime looking up pictures of Ostriches.

And their legs don't pop. Their necks don't pop. No one looks at an ostrich and looks at their skin. It's not meant to be a focal point, it's meant to provide a baseline that people would kind of recognize, allowing the extreme daemonic aspects to be a contrast with how normal the flesh looks.

Anyhow, taking the advice here, I went back over the skin with a wash, here's the result of that (taken under different lighting, unfortunately):

Dammit RedBeard. Your painting skills are just slowed. I can say Ive honestly never seen in person anything as good as you paint. I am glad that you put some wash on the flesh, I saw what you were going for before, but it still looked a bit bland.
Im still curious how you or anyone for that matter, can blend paint so friggin well. Thatd be a good skill to know

Skin looks better and model looks more complete thanks to the wash IMO. Although KingCracker's right, I know GD winners that would envy your blending skill.

The blending looks even better under that lighting. The skin looks a little better, too.

Like I said, I realize you were going for a realistic bird skin tone, I just don't think it really looked "right" on the model.

The wash made a huge difference. Also I understand you were using ostriches as a reference point... but to that I say (kindly, of course), what kind of an ostrich has such a colourful set of wings, wears a robe, is a daemon, and casts magic?

All in all though the wash made a big difference and I think you have done some great work there. I certainly wouldn't have the patience to paint one of those bad boys

Holy mother of mayhem that is one sweet bird! I didn't mind the skin tone before, it was quite subtle
but it fit the model, at least for me, BUT with the new wash it really enhanced the model.

I agree with this. The skin is just plain, almost unfinished. A little brown wash would go a LONG way.

How funny is it that I was eating chicken wings when I opened this thread? I even got a bit sick when I saw the original skin tone!

It is more appetizing with the wash. The detail on the Horrors and Staff are amazing.

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.
