Hey guys,

I'm taking my step-kids to the store tomorrow so they can buy a couple boxes with their christmas money. The 11 year old plays Tyranids (which I don't know much about) and I was wondering if I could get a few tips on certain units that he should buy most of or ones he shouldn't even buy. He got a battleforce last christmas and I bought him a box of genestealers this christmas. So right now he is working with:

Warriors x 3
Genestealers x 16
Hormogaunts x8
Termagants x 8
Carnifex x 1

(it was last years box set...)

I think we're just looking for a direction to go for a well rounded Nid army. Thanks guys!

One of THE best things he can buy right now, that will still be great when the new codex hits in january, is the hive tyrant. He has got most of his slots filled already so I think a Hive Tyrant would be great. They are one of the most versatile HQs in the game and would make a great centerpiece to what he has so far.

I agree Hive Tyrants are good but is he going to be asembling it? If so i can be very frustrating to assemble a large metal model with super glue which he'll probally glue his hands together

Nah brother, He put together his entire box set including his Carnifex. 11 and 12 year olds aren't retards or monkeys....they are capable of alot.

Hmm... I think you may have just lucked out an gotten some through and through nerds. I was doing the same stuff at their age, but for the most part kids are retards til long after highschool.

On topic, Tyrant will be the best investment with the existing models.

I never Pinned my Tyrant and No breakage yet. Zoanthropes on the other hand...... Worst model ever. Sculpt is great, division of pieces is horrible.

Whats pinning? Like pretty much literally pinning?

Pinning is when you drill a small hole with a pin vice into both sides of a metal join and then insert a thin piece of rod, usually brass but sometimes a paper clip, into the holes and glue the whole thing together for a great deal of added strength.

I agree 100%. Kids are crazy attentive when they are interested in something. I started mini war gaming when I was about that age, maybe a little younger and I spent hours gluing together my metal battletech minis until I had them just they I wanted them. Just ask a kid who is into dinosaurs or pokeman about the subject and they will lambaste you with names and facts, it is pretty cool. Too bad as we grow up, most of us lose that incredible sponge like ability to absorb knowledge.

Yah, he's pretty much ready to rock. All that is missing from that list is a big scary Hive Tyrant. Guaranteed he'll love the model.

Some people get it, most don't. How bout you, do you get it?

I would recommend another battleforce, if they have the money, or can talk Dad into chipping in.

8 gaunts just isn't enough, and 3 warriors is a bit weak.

With another BF, they can have 5 warriors, and make one an 'alpha'. Gives them 2-3 broods of stealers, and enough guants to make decent sized broods.

Then use the carnifex as a fex, or to 'count as' one of the other bazillion TMCs soon available.

When I stated Nids I did the first thing I could make an army out of for the cheapest price (aka box of gaunts w/broodlord) If i could buy what I wanted I would of bought a Hive Tyrant and 2 Battle forces. But looking back I've never regretted the Broodlord. Won every game I've used him in . Then again I haven't actually found a good list for the HTyrant
