Hi dakka,

just started playing wfb from 40k. I have a wee rules question.

Read somewhere that infantry don't get the bonus to their armour save from a shield if they are hit in the flanks. Is this the case? Can't see it anywhere in the rulebook but have a vague recollection of Reading it somewhere.

Mid game at the moment so any quick responses would be massively appreciated.

Thanks in advance dakka-ites

They dont get the *bonus* from handweapon* + shield, which is an extra +1AS in combat only, if they are hit in the flanks or rear.

You get to use your shield unless you are using a two handed weapon.

*ANY weapon that has any special effects, such as spears etc, are NOT handweapons.

Which is one of the dumber rules in WFB. Spear Phalanxes were very tough nuts to crack, because of the multitude of spears AND because of the tight shield formation.

If anything, HW+S should give less protection than Spear+shield. Then make spears more expensive and shields cheaper to balance.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.

The explanation given in the rule book is that the hand weapon offers a parry save and this is the reason for the +1 AS when using HW + Shield.

the way spears and halberds etc work is really, really inconsistent with "reality" - they are a very very simple abstraction.

Yeah, it's an abstraction. Each weapon has a role. HW + shield for durability, spear + shield for more attacks.
