Hello everyone. I've been lurking this forum for some time now and decided it would be a good time to register. I was thinking about playing WH 40k. I found a Tau Empire box set in my basement but they have lost peices/broken and I don't really like Tau from what I read about them, so I am thinking about selling them and buying a Tyranid Battleforce. What do you guys think? I like the background and the style of play from what I've read (zerg rush anyone?) but I have nevery played WH40k and need advice on this. Thanks in advance to whoever gives advice (and those who don't will fear my wrath).

Welcome. So you have any friends that can help introduce you to the armies they collect? The main thing is to find an army who's models you like and go from there. I believe in January they're getting a new tyranid battle force and codex release if your willing to wait. And due to their nature you can generally tailor them heavily to your taste. But a lot of the recent codex's have allowed extra flexibility. I collect tau, imperial guard and a smattering of space marines myself. In the end take your time and have a good look at all the forces available for what one takes your fancy most. Also maybe consider war hammer fantasy also. Theres some great models for that. I have a wood elves army myself for that. Whatever you decide have fun!

Tyranids will have plenty of options in the codex for you to play around with. It sounds like your big into starcraft so I would say either pick s[ace marines who operate close to terrans or Nids who operate close to Zerg.

Space Marines are not as expensive and have a low model count army. Plus they are really easy to learn the basics of 40k without too many penalties. If you can find Battle of Mcragge still, buy it because it has alot of good stuff.

Comparing tournament records is another form of e-peen measuring.

I don't have any friends that are into WH40k ATM, though I'm quite sure a few would like to try it out. I never really liked terrans, more zerg and protoss but I can't spend too much money on Minis. There are many types of Space Marines, so I'm unsure which one would be best for me. I really like the 'Nid models but I'm afraid that, if they are like the zerg, would need a lot of minis.

Not necessarily. Shop around on ebay or independent sites if your looking for cheaper models. Hormgaunts and genestealers aren't hard to come buy usually. If you want terran/human armies with a lot of variety you might like to consider daemonhunters or witchhunters.

Ok so I made my choice, I'm getting a Tyranid army. Would you advice getting the box set? Or are there cheaper alternatives?

Try looking for the old tyranid battleforce from some independent retailers, the new ones are worse than those of the 4th edition.

What does it look like and what are the differences? And what should I get, other than the Battleforce (I am unsure about what play style I will use, so I am thinking of getting the Battleforce, assembling them and than get codex and figuring what to do from there)

Try to find any of the APOC formations on EBay or in LGS. They are a great deal.

Is this worth it? It looks like it is http://cgi.ebay.ca/Warhammer-40K-Tyranid-Army-and-Case_W0QQitemZ180450162517QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2a03aaf755

Step one, buy the current Tyranid Codex and the 40K Rulebook.

Step two, find the local gaming scene in your area. This may be a GW store, it might be an independent store, or just a club. This is not a game you can play by yourself.

Step three follow the advice listed above or call The Warstore and save 20% on all GW merchandise!

Edit: On second thought you may want to wait a couple weeks as a new Tyranid Codex will be coming out.

I'd go for Tyranids since their new codex will appear in January.
