Alright for some I guess.
This would be better suited for 40k tactics methinks instead though..

magnitize the turret and you can haev all three!
That being said both devil dog and banwolf have their uses.
Both are even better with creed giving them outflank. One suggestion though if you take a banwwolf give it a multimelta on the hull and not the heavy flamer. MM is much better for wound allocation purposes

The most common piece of advice I've heard is Banewolf + MM. Now I'm not conviced thats the best way to do it since its a multi-tasker to be sure. Part of me likes the simple nature of the Devil Dog + MM + HK. Move 6" and fire 3 S8 shots at a tank, two of them AP1. Even outside 12", people don't like getting hit with AP1 weapons.

All three have their uses. Probably the best idea is to magnetize everything that is weapon related and allow you flexibility. Simple points hellhounds will eat hordes provide decent fast hard hit, but will require backup, they are not Leman russ like in their survivability. Devildogs do well coming out of the side and vaporizing armor, but remember that they don't have very serious anti infantry so they may need to be considered disposable if pulling them out of the side. I stress the word MAY in the previous sentence. Banewolfs squish heavy infantry and MC. They do need to get close however so don't stop to sniff the roses of dead minor units on your way to the big target. Hope this helps.

If you only have one, I say don't run it - get a second one, and build a Hellhound and Banewolf.
You'll rarely find an opponent against which at least one won't be useful.
So, squadron the two and buy the Banewolf smoke launchers - only the Banewolf needs smoke, since only 50% of the squadron needs to have cover for the whole squadron to be in cover.
Turn one, judge whether it's more useful to move flat out and pop smoke, or move 12", pop smoke, and fire with the hellhound. Enemy's turn, put the more damaging hits on the one that won't be useful this battle. Next turn, you can burninate/spray whatever it is on your opponent's infantry.

However, if you build only one and can't magnetize, I say go with the Hellhound. The range is nice, and you still wound MEQs on 2+ anyway.

I agree, the Hellhound is the most versatile. I love having an effective range of 32" for that flame template, it's scary for any army.
