Hey there everybody. I was going to start painting up a couple of CSM with plasma gun/pistol's, and was looking for tips for painting the "core" of the weapon (idk what its called specifically). Here's a Link to a picture in the dakka gallery which shows kinda what I'm after, if you will note the blue area on top of the gun. Could anyone give me any tips on getting some nice effects on that area? i was thinking of doing it a bright red. Any suggestions?

Cheers

Undercoat it white, give it a couple of layers of saphire blue and then a very light drybrush of yellowish off-white paint. White hot baby!

For mine, which is a bit similiar to Gordo's (incidently I do word bearers as well), is done with iceblue. I then give it a Badab Black wash and highlight again on the now lifted ice blue with more, to make it look less dark.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Depends what color you want. If you want a blue coil, I'd recommend painting it Ultramarines blue, ice blue over that, then white and a blue wash. For red, I would probably do a red gore, then blood red, then blazing orange.

I prefer my plasma guns to be bright green, not sure what the GW colour is, but I use a lime green, a dark green wash and a slight drybrush of white.

To be honest I think the replies you've got so far are just overcomplicating things, I painted mine ultramarines blue and then dry brushed the "ribs" skull white... it looks fine...

Metallic.
It's meant to be the magnetic induction coils.
If they're glowing, too much power is going through them.

Point taken, 'Eavy Metal don't even show them glowing at all.

No wonder I usually see them painted metallic, I always wondered why and now that I know it makes sense. The metallic color does look good, so I would paint it that.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

If you want to go the metallic route, you could base the coils in Tin Bitz and drybush/highlight with Dwarf (Dwarven?) Bronze. Did it to my IG Sentinel plasma cannons and it doesn't look too bad.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

That's TOTALLY the point!

I vote for colorful glow! Make em stand out!

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.
