I've run into a bit of a dilemma, as ork players tend to. I understand that in shooting, if a unit that an IC has joined, or that has an upgraded model such as a Nob, then the allocated wounds are controlled by the player whose unit is being shot. But in an assault, the rulebook says that ICs can be targeted as if it were a seperate unit, and attacks could be directed towards it, and all wounds received as a result of this are also allocated on the IC. But it doesn't really mention the upgrade characters (i.e. the Nob again), so for example if I was in an assault with a mob of 30 boyz and one of them was a PK wielding nob, and the opponent directed lets say 5 attacks on the nob, the nob takes three wounds and fails 2 of the saves, meaning he takes one wound. Now does this wound have to directed on the nob, or can it be allocated on the boyz?

Upgraded characters are part of the squad for all purposes, even close combat.
So you allocate to the body bags. The only time you are force to allocated to upgraded characters are:
1. Special rules.
2. The number of wounds equals or exceeds the number of models in the squad.

IC's are different...because they are different

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

This sums it up rather well

So would you recommend getting 'Eavy Armour for my Nob in the Boyz squad or would you say it's unnecessary as they have 30 wounds?

Unnecessary for footslogging hordes, usually.
An argument can be made for mechanized nobs getting it, as you're often limited in the number of boyz/transports you can bring and places to spend spare points... a 50/50 shot at saving a boy might be worth it to you.

When I run trukk boyz, yes I pretty much always put eavy armor on the nobz, simply because there isnt so many wounds to pass around. And Ive had that 4+ save allow me to go on and just trash things more then a few times. But I agree, in a larger mob, nope the armor is a waste of points really.
