Well I am afraid you are going to have to wait until the 16th, otherwise you will be getting dated advice.

Also welcome to dakka!

A new tyranid codex is released on the 16th January. Some people are discussing the new rules already based on what they've heard, but since no-one has all the facts lying in front of them these discussions are a bit confusing. I'd wait until you can get the new book. Then check on this site, say around the 20th, there should be a massive amount of chat, what units are good, army lists people are considering, etc.

Until then, maybe you should paint some termagants and hormagaunts. They're one of the things that we know will be cheap and effective, and unlike the bigger creatures you don't have to decide about weapon options and upgrades.

The irony of a Nid player posting the symbol of the Inquisition after his post is priceless. Bring on the Ordo Xenos!

How is it they live in such harmony - the billions of stars - when most men can barely go a minute without declaring war in their minds about someone they know.

Do you have a Hive Tyrant? If not, then you MUST get one. That's step #1.

Before we go any further, do you have the codex yet? And what models do you have, and how many?

A Hive Tyrant is NOT required. The book has 5 HQ options (two of which are Tyrants) that are all equally viable depending on the build of your list.

Synergy is the key, if your army works together you can win, if not, blarg.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1
