They are digital weapons because they are WORN on your digits (fingers). Not digital as opposed to analogue.
They are weapons built into rings, to look like jewellery, but are as powerful as pistol class weapons. There used to be separate stats for them (as the pistol weapon, laspistol/plasma pistol, needler) but now I think all they do is +1A).
They are a nod to RT 40k, when the jokaero (intergalactic space orang-utans) made them.
