As the title suggests this is a thread to post your favorite free games, preferably with a brief description and a download link to share the joy of gaming on the cheap.

My favorite free game is the Battle for Wesnoth, a great hex based TBS/RPG game in a fantasy setting (elves, humans, orcs, etc.) that I have been playing on and off since discovering it five years ago. It has over 200 units and 6 major factions and a good map editor.
As most of the programming is text-based, altering units and factions is quite easy with good walkthroughs on the site. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in fantasy or strategy.

SPRING is not a game as such, it is an RTS engine that started out as fan made reproduction of Total Annihilation. Now you log on to the server and download the mod (game) and maps you want to play, which includes several good TA offshoots and a great Star Wars game. It has a strong community and is CONSTANTLY updated (A friend tells me of a period of nigh daily updates) and supports 16 Player Multiplayer.

DOOM, the Roguelike is funnily enough a rogue like game in the Doom universe. It uses sounds from Doom, simple ASCII graphics and I find it to be a lot more accessible than many other roguelikes.

So dakka, what free games do you enjoy?
