Land Raider Pilot on Cruise Control

I am gonna throw this into the general topics, because i am just not sure where to put it. I love telling little war stories from my table top playing days, cuz they are fun and usually something silly happens that everyone can laugh at! granted most of my stories are from 3rd ed 40k, but hey they are still fun.
I love bolters, and i love it when they get called into question as an effective troop weapon. Heres my bolter war story.
I was playing against my friends Chaos Khorne army, the game was in its third or fourth turn, and it was a take and hold in the center of the board, i was able to run nearly three quarters of my army into the center by my turn three they set up and walked all over his infantry in the shooting phase. His assault phase came around and his lord & retnue with jump packs jumped into the center of my army. Then his chaos lord popped his blood thirster! thats right his lord got possessed. It then completely whipped out my command squad at the center.... which he didn't want to do for this reason.
In my shooting phase, i trained about 40 bolters all within assault shooting (two shots each) on his blood thirster. Now I live and die by the theory that the more saves you make him roll the more he'll fail.. its simple math/stats really. So eighty bolter shots later and not one special weapon shot, the blood thirster had to roll 33 saves, and he failed 8, leaving him quite dead to that standard boring BOLTER.

Right to this day though, he likes to brag that it literally took every single bolter on the table lol. but hey... when the thirster pops there is only ONE target.

My most reliable marine killer is massed splinter rifle fire.
Which is actually pretty annoying. Good that they die, bad that some always survive and then my warriors normally break and run off the table. My friends joke that my DE alway act according to character when half my basic troops scarper.

The funny thing is, 33 saves out of 80 bolter shots is RIDICULOUSLY LUCKY. Like, seriously, wow. That should never happen. Each shot has a (2/3)*(1/6)=11% chance to wound a bloodthirster. Multiply that by 80 shots and you get about 8 saves taken, not 33! In fact, the odds of such an event, 33 wounds out of 80 shots that are BS 4 and wound on a 6, are 1 in 245,928,387,352. I think you remember incorrectly.

Taking 8 saves would be a lot more reasonable, but it would not kill a bloodthirster, as the subject describes.

i remember the time i went up against necrons and guardsmen with tau, all i did was keep my main forces (firewarriors and vehicles) and i left them as far away as possible from the enemy. my battlesuits were the only ones that did some damage
battlesuit kills: 3 leman russ 3 necron destroyers 1 squad of necron wariors
stealth suit kills:1 hellhound 1 guardsman command squad and a monolith
(this is all the truth no lies)

I recall correctly, that game has passed into my local shops lore, it was part of a tournament, we were both two game losers and it meant nothing in terms of the actual tournament. I had at least 3 or 4 witnesses, you can do the math and probability but in that case i quote Mr. Solo "Never tell me the odds!"
The deal is, I saw it, my opponent saw it, adnd several others say it. I rolled 80 dice, raked up better than 2/3 hits, i hit over 70 times, and I wounded just under 50% of those, so yes, it was an incredibly lucky roll on my part, and he had a bad roll on his save(s).
It happens.
I played a guy three times in a row (with 3rd Ed) he had an army the had FIVE legion of the danmed units in it, and for the course of three games he only managed to get a TOTAL of three out of fifteen on the table, really long scatter rolls, landing in difficult terrain where EVERYMAN failed an armor test, or just plain rolling snake eyes. Bad rolls happen good rolls happen, its all part of the game, numbers and odds only need to count in Vegas... not on the table top.

I remember when my biker powerklaw warboss charged a unit of Tau fire warriors and got his butt handed to him so bad he had to flee. This is even back in 4th when he had 7 attacks on the charge. Missed all but 2 and rolled snake eyes to wound, while the 6 FWs managed to get 2 wounds onto him. I was less than pleased but couldn't help but laugh at his spectacular failure. He recovered his pride by tearing apart a Necron Monolith next game (needing 6s to hit in 4th ed.)

I remember when I got into close combat with a friends Baharroth. I didn't really read up on their rules, but my friend told me the Phoenix Lord basically had an infinite number of CC attacks, as long as you rolled a certain value on the dice. Could've been bull for all I know. His "dice-streak" just wouldn't end. Needless to say, my rear end was handed to me gently. This was about 10 years ago.

Sadly this was the case. not your friend was not full of bull...... though needless to say, thats why i don't like special characters beyond fluff value or army character.
I remeber seeing this man take the field and he'd routinely rake up 20 to 30 hits.... insanity.

Any single model that can take down a fex in a single round of CC is, as you put it, insanity! Is it like this still or has he been nerfed? Just took upp WH again quite recently after a few years, so I have no idea.

Having a imperial guard command squad charging some nercon warriors killing just enough to force phase out, amazing since I had no other units left and he had a monolith and a couple of tomb spyders. Also has a time in fanatasy where my empire captain and his inner circle knights only mananged to inflict 2 wounds on a tomb prince, with the last one being taken off by the captains horse, now that was an awesome moment.

We had a huge 2000 points per player 2v2 game that culminated in Abaddon standing alone in an open killing ground in front of a massed gunline of Dark Angels and Imperial Guard. He didn't die until the last plasma gun from my tactical squad cooked him.
In another game, another Chaos player summoned a greater daemon in the middle of the table. Tons of fire poured in and couldn't kill him - his saving throws were on fire. Azrael stepped out of his command tank, leveled his combi-plasma, and finished off the big ol' daemon.
These are more plasma stories than anything, but I used to be a plasma spam Dark Angels player.
