I've got a competition coming up soon with some school friends, and they're literally all ork players.

My question is, I've got to design for a 1,250 that can kill.

Heres what I have.

HQ: Space marine Chapter master w/ Storm shield +thunderhammer, artificer armour with a jump pack (210)
1st tactical squad "Bulwark" Flamer +M. Launcher w/ rhino. (205)
2nd tactical squad "Dragonslayers" Plasma cannon + rifle. rhino. (220)
Land raider var "Crusader" or .var "redeemer" (250)
Terminator assault squad "waaaaaaghcrusha" (200)

Qery:

Which should I take for the 'average' ork army? (180 boyz being da wurst)

1. Vindicator (115)
2. Whirlybird (whirlwind) (85)

It'd be nice to hear people thoughts, and any changes I could make.

EDIT: Terminator squad is only 5 men.

The expensive chapter master is not a very good idea. He's basically powerklaw fodder. The more points you spend on him, the more you're going to smart when he gets eaten by a powerklaw-wielding nob after 2 rounds of CC. Instead I would recommend a chaplain to ride with your termies. He's cheap and helps the termies charge. Plasma cannons also aren't really worthwhile against Orks. Flamers, missiles, and boltguns are all your really need unless they bring battlewagons, whereupon you might like to have a melta. The whirlwind will serve you really well for its ability to ignore cover saves unless you're worried about killing nobs and/or battlewagons which the vindicator is better at I would probably go with the vindicator, just in case. By switching to a chaplain you can have both though, which would serve you well.

Well, what kind of Orks? There's a big difference between 180 Boyz and Nob Bikers, or Battlewagon Meganobz and Lootas.

The hard counter to Orks is Land Raider Redeemers/Crusaders. All you have to do is ride around in your unkillable Ork-crushers while flaming and shooting them all to death. Telion sniping the PK Nob is another great addition.

I'm gonna agree about the chapter master. That's a lot of points to sink into one unit. Especially confusing is the jump pack when you have no other jump infantry. He's gonna fly into his own death.

Option 1: Make him a Captain and save 25 points. Dump the jump pack, put him in terminator armor, and have him march with your terminators I'd lose the storm shield and thunder hammer. 2 lightning claws. He's a captain he already has a 3+ invul save. Having two isn't very cost effective, especially when he can have a lightning claw instead.

Option 2: Chaplain in termie armor = pwnage. Better option in my opinion.

Option 3: Librarian Terminator. Pick the powers for whatever you need.

why would I put a chapter master with artificer armour in terminator armour?

First off, w/ terminator armour he's got no consolidation move
he counts as two models

w/ artificer armour he gets a 2+/3+.
captains get a 4+ invul. (for iron halo)

losing the jump pack makes sense, If I do, I can afford to give another unit a better weapon set.

Thanks for the help, guys,

180 boys is the perfect reason to take a Thunderfire. On airburst mode, it wounds on a 3+ and the orc player receives only invulnerables against it.

If thats the case I still wonder why take a chapter master? You're paying 25 points for an orbital bombardment that will scatter a full 2 D6 2/3 of the time. Other than that there is no difference between the Chapter Master and the Captain.

If they're all Ork players, take Thunderfire Cannons. Three of them.

LOL, no one wants to figure out 12 blast templates a turn Whirlwinds would at least prevent that.

Yeah, you wouldn't want to inconvenience your opponent by winning...
