So I just got a hold of 3 Eldar Artillery guns and saw that they come with a large standard base, which I wasn't really a fan of. Of course the rules state mount it on the base provided, but does this truly matter for these models since they are a vehicle?
My main question is would it be an issue in a tournie if I mounted the weapon on a clear flight base? The size and the height of the two bases would be almost identical when I was done.

Whatever base they come with, put them on it. It really is that simple if you want to avoid issues. BTW, just to make sure, are you talking about the Weapon Support Platforms (Heavy Support) or the Guardian Weapons Platforms (Troops)?

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Stupid question but it is 40mm (Terminator) or 60mm (Hive Tyrant/ Dreadnought).
I use 60mm bases I think they are great. 40mm for the platforms.
New rulebook is pretty strict about bases, saves a lot of countless arguing.

What about for those old farts like myself whose Heavy Weapons never came on a base? Can you not shoot our units? Can they themselves shoot? Or is this a case of GW stepping on their own toes...

You must base the models on the base they came with. If they didn't come with a base, they don't have a base, and congratulations, you have untargetable models who cannot shoot (as range is determined from base to base, the only exception being vehicles proper).

Correct these are the Heavy choice Artillery Platforms that I was speaking of. The little guardian ones don't matter at all as for all purposes they pretty much count as a marker. The Artillery Ones though count as vehicles so technically the base it's one doesn't matter because firing is from the barrel and hits are from the haul. Artillery in general have some pretty wonky rules though.

No, they count as Artillery, but the guns use the Vehicle rules when they are hit, take damage, or do pretty much anything. They still are not vehicles though, they are artillery

^^, Don't worry, no-one will actually claim that (and in any case, you can lie and say they came with bases, Jervis won't come and hit you with a Kumquat if you do, Promise!)

PG 55 "The gun models are treated as vehicles with an Armor Rating 10 (see vehicles section)." "Ranges are measured from the gun model"
So hits resolved against the model are either measured from a crew member base or the gun model haul. The firing is from the barrel of the gun since it's treated as a vehicle.

Yes, "Treated as" is not the same as "are". But yeah, I overlooked the ranges part. Woops Time for bed methiks.

Well, if one accepts conversions (debatable) where you can only ADD to a model's size (including the base), which is sometimes very controversial, then IG have pretty much limitless possibilities when it comes to their Heavy Weapons, Eldar would too, since I remember their platforms didn't used to come with bases.
What I have been doing is putting my crew on two separate 25mm bases, and tacking on a "scenic" cavalry base. Unfortunately, IG HW are now a single two wound model.... But may the Eye of Terror blink, I will continue to do this conversion, for the simple fact that it is a hundred times easier to work with. It seems to be worth the effort.

Correct but if they are treated as then they would use the same rules as a vehicle. Under the rules of a vehicle the enemy targets the haul and if a blast center is not over the haul then it would be half strength (if the vehicle ends up taking the hit).
