Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 ... the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.

ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa versus Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.

"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement. "ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC's campus.

"This is a turning point for 3-D," Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro told USA Today.

Interesting. I thought George Lucas was full of gak when he said 3-D would be the wave of the future and that was around ten years ago but with releases like Avatar, Sky Sports, and ESPN's 3-d games (according to the article they spent about two years developing this tech) it looks like he just might be right.

Good questions; I think they're broadcasted in theaters since thats what the article mentions about their previous tests. I don't know much about TV or 3-D technology but I think it'll be a few years before we see this stuff in our mainstream living rooms.

One article says you will need a special 3D capable TV and converter + glasses. It and the Discovery network are starting special 3D dedicated networks. I'm not of a mind to wear more glasses but it could be interesting. An inside camera view of Schumacher tooling in a monte carlo style formula race would be legal cocaine methinks.

Even better the bullet bike version. I could see what it was like for dad to tool through the slalom at 185. YEEEHHHHAAA!

Football in 3d. You'd literally feel every hit and probably grimace just as hard as the players.

3d pron movies. Hell yeah.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

Personally, I want to see presidential debates in 3-d. Would actually make them interesting.

I recall hearing about them trying to put the Star Wars movies into 3-d. Should be interesting!

Up in 3D was rubbish.
