Anyone going to pick them up again now that there's a $35 5 man boxed set with several $17 2 man blisters coming soon?

Oh no, I'm actually wondering if people are going to play them. Is there a codex for them, are they yet another special unit a vanilla list can take? I've heard everything about them but don't know if they are actually used on the tabletop by anyone anymore.

Well they are in the Vanilla SM dex, not a standalone army.
Though there is always count as.
As to people playing them... I think there is a small number. Though they don't look appealing on paper, but YMMV...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I know the fluff, but what are they in game terms? Really, REALLY angry marines with 3++ and special bolter rounds basically? Or do they get something else that I'm not aware of...

Well, it's against the rules to just provide info on the units, just wait til you pass a game store to browse the codex...or get it from a friend... or puchase one.

As an old timer and having played 40k since the Rogue Trader days I'll be doing what we did when they were first introduced, paint up a unit of 5 plastic marines in black with flame and bone motifes rather than spend £25 on 5 figures...

It would cost you between 35-70 dollars to field a full ten man squad of LotD models they give you. Worse, the kit they give you is metal and the models might have weapons you don't want. Its the same problem wiht the Vanguard and Sterguard kits.
Option that is likely cheaper, and more fun: Buy a Tactical Squad. Find some bits, or make your own. Make your own Legion of the Damned models. Enjoy

But they are stinking awesome models!! I love the fluff for them, and the rules aren't altogether awful. Peoples main objections to them are that you can get more effective units for less points. I think if you look that cool it doesn't even matter if you win the game.

I'll buy some eventually because I really like the look of the new models. A 3+ inv save without having to buy a storm shield isn't bad, and I'll just make sure to keep them away from Psycannons.
