Ok, firstly to explain I have read the previous threads in which people had asked about multi assaults in some degree or form, but am still a little unsure how they work.
My understanding is that you charge the first guy forward into base to base, closest to closest. then you can moe the rest as you wish into combat. does this mean i have to get as many into base to base with the unit of choice, and then with the remaining guys who cannot makse base contact move them towards the other unit, or if they can make within 2 inches of a guy in hand to hand do i move them into support.
I'm just unsure after the closest guy charges their closest what exactly happens and would like it cleared up in easy kid language thankyou.

Easy Kid Language? My Speciality!
It is very simple once you get the hang of it.
Step 1) Declare the Target of your assault. This can be restricted by multiple things, most commonly shooting (i.e. it has to be the unit you shot at).
Step 2) The Closest Model of the assaulting unit moves into base contact with the closest model of the target unit via the most direct route (generally a straight line, but Impassible terrain and all that).
Step 3) Every single other model is now free to assault whatever unit they damn well please, provided you follow the VERY STRICT AND EXACTING procedure for moving assaulting models (i.e they must attempt to get into BTB with a model not already engaged in BTB and remain in coherency with the models that have already made their assault moves)
Step 4) Profit!

At least put a if you were joking.
Otherwise, some would view it as 'baiting' someone to flame that statement.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Not sure what you're saying here. Every model in the attacking unit has to try to get into BtB. Not sure why you're singling IC's out specifically, unless it's to point out that IC's need to be in BtB to be considered engaged.

Every model must attempt to get into base to base contact with units you are assaulting. However, you don't have to assault any units other than the one you initially assault (within the restrictions above).
So if you are closer to one unit than the one you shot at in the previous turn, you are not required to charge that unit due to the "closest to closest" rule, and in fact can't if you wanted to if your previous shooting phase involved a different unit on the business end.
Moreover, if there are three units all the exact same distance away from you and lined up like they want to be charged, you are not required to assault all 3. You could assault your initial target, plus 1 or 2 of the others as you see fit. It is entirely up to you whether you will assault more than one unit or not, and if so, how many you choose to assault.
The primary requirements are:
- You can maintain unit coherency regardless of how many opponents you assault (i.e. don't try to assault units that are several units apart)
- You attempt to reach base to base with any units that you can reach

wow ... i always assumed that they had said you must move them first ... but no just Pile in move and reacting to being assaulted ... kind of silly GW didn't also include that they must as move after the first models been found in range. Wonder if this is something I'm half remembering from 4th

Not true. Any models that can get into BtB must do so, but it doesn't have to be with the initial target unit.
Page 34, "Assaulting Multiple Enemy Units" - second paragraph:
Rulebook, page 34 wrote:As usual the closest attacking model must be moved to contact the closest model in the enemy unit against which the assault was declared. Then remaining models can assault models belonging to other enemy units, as long as they keep following the rules for moving assaulting models...
The requirement to keep coherency will slow this down unless the units are very close together, but it is technically possible to move the 1st model onto the declared unit and the second onto a different unit.
It's also possibly worth pointing out that the requirement isn't just that they get into BtB.
- Move first model
- Then move other models into BtB with enemy models not already in BtB with one of yours where possible.
- Then move other models into BtB with enemy models already in BtB where possible.
- Then move other models to within 2" of a model from that unit in BtB where possible.
- Then simply move any remaining models into coherency Automatically Appended Next Post: Eldar Own wrote:Can you position them so that your autarch isn't in BTB with that scary powerfist guy??
So long as you follow the rules for moving assaulting models, you can choose which models wind up with which enemy models, yes.
Bear in mind, though, that scary powerfist guy doesn't need to be in BtB with the Autarch. He just needs to be engaged.... so either in BtB with the Autarch, or not in BtB with a model from a different unit and within 2" of a model from his unit in BtB with the Autarch.
