Subject: Avatar game Review. Cynicism inside.

So I broke the rule of playing games. I played one based on a movie. Starwars and golden eye excepted. But Im getting bored of laggy old MW2, and am still waiting for mass effect 2. Anyway so you play as Able Ryder (dunno what they were thinking should of called him Shooter McGavin). And you get to chose to fight for the blue people or the corporate sluts. The game is a 3rd person shooter so you spend a lot of time staring at your avatar's ass running through the jungle. I chose to side with the blue people. My first quest as a blue person was to get some fire weed (I had no idea the navi sparked up) for some grumpy tribal leader. Sadly I did not read the obvious tool tip and got stuck. On the first quest! RAGE. So then I decided to play corporate sluts and kill every last blue person I met as payback. See this is the where the game is good. If you disliked the navi in the movie and was going for the humans you can finally have your vengeance. Because this game allows you to feel kinda evil. Of course it is a movie game so the it has some faults like. No difficulty setting, entirely linear quests which are super duper repetitive, poor multiplayer (obviously) and almost no variety in weapons or armor. YOu do have super powers and can ride vehicles (including the power suit) or creatures (if your blue) so its not all bad. So my able ryder char has turned against the navi (IE doing his job) and has his avatar puppet body killed by your race traitor rival harper. So the whole game is played as a human. Beginning quests; Search for rocks, put 3 of them around a tree; boss is happy! Go to new location search for rocks. When your character talks to other humans he explains he is searching for rocks.. sigh it like the game is making fun of me for playing it. But while you are doing this you turn up at a village and slaughter all the inhabitants, cleansing areas of navi is an achievement. Hell even shooting inoffensive plants nets you exp. During this you also get to fly a scorpion which is fun and use a power suit which is sadly less effective then foot slogging, but still cool. Also there is a buggy which has no weapons and is useless. What I mean by evil is. In the game you have no justification for killing other then they were in the way. So kinda evil. Still no murdering navi babies etc. I am disappoint. After killing hundreds of Navi near the end of the game, you actually get something different to do and are sent to kill Navi leaders (there were boss fights before that but they were just between me and my precious rocks!). The first one of which asks you to join them and kill all the people you were fighting with. By this point I was over my rage and sick of navi bezerkers running at me all day. Also They make the humans quite abrasive so you have no loyalty at all despite all the time playing for the faction. So Batista a slowed demolitions expert.. Boom Boom yeah wooah type of guy, who is the guy who sent me out in the first place is the guy I return to kill. I was megadave disappointed when he wasn't even shocked and had no dialogue. Kill 2 other guys I never saw in the game but apparently knew, go to the gigantic willow tree, no final boss fight the end. What? Maybe this game is meant to be played as a blue person because the human thing seemed tacked on. I figure as much anyway. So I play as a blue person I read the tool tip and finish the first quest and away I go. The game improves quite a fair bit. Humans go from being one dimenstional corporate sluts to evil invaders. The game gets extremely preachy. Humans are portrayed in a similar way to nazis in games as faceless thugs. A bit to much bias, put a message in the game dont make the game a message. I start using the super powers like being invisible or running fast as they have a purpose as I am now a naked blue Khorne Bezerker. Blue power! you get to ride a banshee (the flying dragon thing) which is really well done and I enjoyed alot. You also get to ride that giant panther which was cool too. Game's story makes more sense from this angle. More then just finding rocks though thats there too. Anyways Ive rambled enough I give the game two stars out of 5 .. meaning its for the unemployed with too much time on their hands. Also thank god I hired it AU$ 7.25 for two days aint too bad. Whats that the price of a GW wash? Also if like my friend you hated the movie (he walked out) and the blue hippies I give it 3 stars as you will be able to kill them. For the record I like the blue people and the movie I just raged! EDIT the game doesn't let you turn your back on the navi side and join with humans near the end, I was disappointed.

You actually wasted your time playing this game? Man, I could've told you it sucked and I haven't even played it
General rule-of-thumb: Videogames based on movies will ALWAYS suck, and ALWAYS be extremely linear, with little to no replay value.

And the modability of the old Worms games! Ever seen an Uzi that fires Supersheep? I have. And a Holy Hand Grenade Minigun that fires 1000 rounds. Takes a good minute or so to finish shooting

the only movie video games I ever liked was the old 80's star wars arcade game where it's all vector graphics and you keep hearing obi wan telling you to use the force as you're flying around and when you attack the death star the laserbeams it shoots at you look like snow flakes.
And Raiders of the Lost Ark for Atari.

I think there are more decent video games based on movies than there are decent movies based on video games.

Return of the King was awesome. It was kind of odd how Sam was a better fighter than Aragorn though.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Heck, all of the LotR games were pretty well-done. Alright, I'll admit that Fellowship did a poor job of following the movie (Closer to the book, IIRC) and Two Towers had a difficulty level that was stupidly hard, but they were all pretty fun.

There were two different Fellowship games, actually.

I liked the Two Towers. Hard, but fun. Other than that, only Star Wars has made a smooth Film-to-Game transition.

Dude, The Two Towers was fething impossible. I couldn't finish the last level, and I was stuck for ages on the Warg Rider boss fight.

Ever notice how most of the best Star Wars game titles aren't actually made in lieu of a movie? Or how they feature levels that weren't shown in a movie? Don't get me wrong, the games that did have movie levels (I'm looking at you Battlefield: Star Wars) were quite good, but the majority of the games have their own characters and storylines that are relatively independant from those in the films.

The farthest I ever got was the battle of Helms Deep at the gate (Where you have to hold out for like 15+ waves of enemies...it's been a while, I don't remember the exact number). Holy crap, how do they expect you to ever finish that level alone? IIRC, the game has pretty decent co- op, or at least RotK did.
