So if you want a cheap Heavy weapon for an Infantry squad that is geared for killing other basic infantry, would you rather take a Heavy Bolter or a Mortar or should you not take anything and rely on your free Lasguns and FRFSRF ?

I figure that the GL makes a good supporting weapon for either of the Heavies.

Well if you want cheap, mortars are cheapest, no? I'm liking them better than my heavy bolters, due to the new scattering/barrage making mortars better (imo) and the new glancing rules making HB's weaker (imo). I'd agree with the GL, though consider sniper rifles with the morts add range and to increase chance to pin.

Fun and Fluff for the Win!

Against any sort of squad the mortar is going to do more wounds reliably.

A BS3 heavy bolter that shoots at T4 for 6 turns is going to deal 6 wounds.

You only have to hit 9 models in an entire game's worth of shooting with the Mortar blast to outperform the heavy bolter. Add to that the bonus of being able to pin.

Now, against one model, the heavy bolter will be much more reliable. But for hitting massed targets, opt for the Mortar. The GL isn't a bad pair because its targets are going to be largely similar to the mortar's.

I still prefer the autocannon, however.

That was my logic going into this and its nice to see that I'm the right path.
Mortar + GL + 7 Lasguns seems like a decent way to threaten basic infantry for a meager 60 points.

I feel that the best place to use Autocannons is in HWS. 75 points for 6 shots is hard to beat and you don't have to worry about the fact that your Heavy weapon has 2x the range of the rest of your firepower and it doesn't waste silly S3 shots against AV10+.
