I am tempted to make myself a painting station as I'm not sure I can be bothered to purchase the GW one for £20. We have loads of cardboard boxes here at work and was thinking these could be an option. Whats the best way to protect it though? Will simple spray varnish suffice?

Varnish wont be enough, soak them in white glue will help.
