Mission: 2 objectives
Deployment: Spearhead
Deployment:
The ultramarines deploy in depth.
Ultramarines Turn 1
I just wanted to point this one out. He moved up his zone of influence but used speeders and vehicle's to keep a risky deep strike zone. This is a pretty good spread out position to be in. You don't want to castle and pack in tightly because of drones and flamers, this way he has extended his influence but still made it risky for me to deep strike.
Daemons Turn 1
My primary wave is the 2 blight drones, 1 great unclean one, 1 unit of plague bearers, 2 daemon princes. Whenever playing in objective missions i make sure to put at least one troop squad in the initial wave. This is to ensure that if I don't get the right half of my army I have at least one of my troop units in reserve. I roll a 1 and get the other half. So in come 2 units of plague bearers, 2 units of flamers, 1 great unclean one, and a daemon prince. Everything in the initial wave scatters except the plague bearers I drop on my objective, luckily the deviations are fairly good. The flamers kill off 5 marines from a combat squad and 7 of the scouts.
Ultramarines Turn 2
The Ultramarines move up and unload. Easily wiping out one of the three man flamer squads. The last pesky flamer proves to be too resilient and doesn't go down. About half of the forward plague bearer squad goes down to vindicator fire whirlwinds and razorback action. The dreads and land speeders light up the daemon prince putting 3 wounds on him, but the great unclean one dropped in his backfield emerges unscathed.
Daemons Turn 2
The daemons look for reinforcements and get big ugly guys in respone. The one great unclean one that does come in scatters 11 inch's onto my own plague bearers and my opponent places him in the back corner of my deployment zone. The two daemon princes manage to land with minor deviation. This was one of his mistakes, just because my back corner is the furthest spot from him doesn't mean it's the furthest spot from the action. He should have placed it on the other table corner, it didn't really affect the outcome of the game but it could have. My one flamer jumps up and flames a vindicator, a razorback, and the 5 man squad with attatched librarian. It rips the gun off the vindicator and puts 3 wounds into the squad (he takes one on the librarian). My daemon prince assaults the no close combat weapon dread and destroys it. My 4 man plague bearers charge the combat squad but do no damage, losing one in return. My other plague bearers charge the librarian and friends, killing the librarian and he chooses to auto-flee the squad. The great unclean one charges the
cc dread and immobilizes it.
Ultramarines Turn 3
The Ultramarines shoot the last of the flamers, kill off the wounded daemon prince, and put a wound on one of the new daemon princes. The plague bearer combat squad fight is a draw, and the great unclean on rips the arm off of the dreadnaught and blows it up. The 2 man squad rallied at the start of the turn and start to move towards my objective.
Daemons Turn 3
A blight drone and 2 daemon princes become available. Both daemon princes try to start working on killing tanks, jumping into each of the razorbacks. One razorback goes sky high, the other (only because it has extra armor) gets away with a weapon destroyed and shaken. The blight drone drops in and kills 2 out of a 5 man squad they fail morale and run off of the table.
Ultramarines Turn 4
He lays some heavy fire into the daemon princes and one has one wound left the other has taken 2 wounds. The plague bearers are doing a good holding position but they are down to one guy now. Finally the great unclean one destroys the ultramarines dreadnaught and is freed up!
Daemons Turn 4
I get in one blight drone, which scatters onto something and goes back into the warp. One daemon prince jumps up and destroys the typhoon, the other jumps up on the tower and kills the scouts. The great unclean one runs over and blows up a whirlwind. The blight drone manages to immobilize the assault cannon wave serpent.
Ultramarines Turn 5
The speeder with multi-melta lines up it's shot and takes out the wounded daemon prince. His 5 man squad starts running towards my deployment zone. He's staged himself for a turn 6 objective contest.
Daemons Turn 5
I kill off the 2 man squad with one blight drone, 3 out of 5 of the other squad with the other blight drone, my great unclean one makes it into combat, but fails to damage the fast moving razorback.
I currently have control of both objectives, but we roll a 4 and go another round.
Ultramarines Turn 6
His speeder zooms up to contest and he parks the vindicator on my objective, he tries to do the same with the razorback but it immobilizes itself.
Daemons Turn 6
I destroy the razorback and the land speeder (it only took a great unclean on and a daemon prince to do it!). Giving me 1 objective with the other being contested by the vindicator.
Daemons win 1:0
Aftermath:
Good bloody battle. Definitly kept us both thinking to the end. I think it was fairly well played on both sides, about the only thing I would have done on the marine side is tried to combine fire a bit more. I've noticed especially with the nurgle daemons that usually by about turn 2-3 I have multiple big wound nasties with more than one wound on them. Now I try to make this happen because of lines of fire but concentrating to bring down a big one instead of spreading out the wounds is key to taking down my list.
