Hey, thought I'd post some WIP.

Here's one of the Shoota Boyz I'm working on at the moment:

Not the best pics - neither got the skillz nor the tools to do it right!

I play green tide, so I have to paint a lot of these. Therefore my technique is real easy - just base and wash for the most part. The only highlights are on the edges of the armor.

Still need to base the batch this guy comes from. I paint them in series of 10 and save the Nob for last. You can also see that I'm not done on his horns. Otherwise, he's done.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'll post the rest as I finish them up. It's grand to be back - I haven't painted anything in years!

Looks a bit better than 'tabletop' I think - nicely done!

Looking great!
I especially like the skin tone, very organic looking.
Evokes 'space fungus' rather than 'radioactive freak'

If I had to pick, I'd say:
- drill out the barrel of the Shoota! (use a knife to make a centred guide-hole, I've wasted many a Bolter by drilling off-centre!).
- Highlight the yellow icon on the helmet, it's very central & eye catching.
- use a spot (just a touch) of wash on the rivets on the armour plates.

I really like what you have done here especially, as previously noted, the skin tone!
What colours did you use?

Nice, a very even coat. Great for regular boyz. Just some suggestion, some people don't like this, but I think you should take a look here:

There is also a Youtube video from Miniwargaming that shows how to make some great looking Orks that skin tones go from a sandy yellow to a dark greenish brown.

Thanks everyone! I just call it tabletop quality since I've seen so many doing it better, but I know I couldn't!

@Brotheralexos: Saw the Mad Genius vid you posted. Great stuff! He's good at what I think is most important: Neatness. I don't like cluttered paint schemes! Think I saw a similar tip here on Dakka on using washes over a white undercoat...

@Culial: Thanx mate. It's actually just a few coats of Gretchin Green and then a fat wash of Thraka Green! And it looks better IRL than in the pic. I find that a lot hinges on how you apply the wash - I drown all the recesses first, then lightly brush whatever's left over on the raised muscles.

Some of them I wash with Ogryn Flesh instead! Then it's not green anymore at all, rather a really leathery, tanned skin tone. Would be perfect for Kroot!

Will highlight the icon. Thanks for the tip on the rivets! Badab Black? Devlan?

Seriously though I really like bright schemes like this

I am always right. I thought I was wrong this one time, but I was wrong.

I like it. did you wash the red armour before highlighting it?

Thanks! No, first I paint two coats of Mechrite, then a thin edge highlight with Blood Red, then finally a wash of Baal Red. The wash isn't for shadows, but to blend in the highlight. Otherwise it's too bright!

Someone suggested to wash with devlan round the nails and such, and since that would be for shadows it would have to be done before highlights. Maybe mechrite-devlan-mechrite (not around the detail)-blood red-baal.

Ogryn Flesh also gives a nice effect on mechrite.
