Like the skull servitors from the devastator sprues? I've got no idea what to do with those, either.

Depends on the box you've bought.
in general:
- body parts
- weapons of all sorts
- purity seals
- pouches
- grenades
- auspex ( old scanner, no longer supported in rules )
- telescopic sight
Could help to mention which sprues were talking about. Space marines got several sprues...

well, i've just packed them all away so my young sons dont scatter the parts around in the morning, (am off to bed myself in a moment), we have some tactical, devastator, commander, command and assault marines under construction at the moment
(and an armarda of rhino's, but i dont want to go there...)
(word got around the rellies that my boys had found and confiscated my old space crusade set and were now spending all their pocket monies at the GW shops - almost every rellie bought them something 40K or warhammer for christmas...)
- it's the fiddly bits, IE: i just found out about the "scroll cases" - but what are the skull and cable things for?
(there's more unknown bits too, i'll unpack and list them when i can)
i was hoping someone had taken photo's and put them up somewhere explaining what all the bits ARE...
all help gratefully recieved,
(must snooze soon)

The skull and cable things are the servitor skulls , kronk mentioned in his post.
They lack a given place, so just keep them for later use?
Normally, there are the needed parts :
- heads, arms, legs, backpacks, weapons, bases
and the "bling" :
- seals, pouches, grenades, chapter specific or general symbols,...
So please ask specifically for a sprue.

Anything tha doesn;t correspond to wargear listed in the codex is pretty much there for style.
The Devastator box is definitely the most confusing though. Remember that a Devastator squad can have up to ten Marines in it. 1 Sergeant, 4 Heavy Weapon dudes, and then up to another 5 cannon fodder Marines. In gaming terms, you want those cannon fodder Marines around so that when the squad take wounds, you allocate as many as you can to the cannon fodder, so you can keep your heavy weapons alive as long as possible.
The point is, when making your cannon fodder guys, you've got two options. You can buy the combat squad box, and use those strange bits with the handles on them to model some basic marines that don;t look exactly the same as the ones in your Tac Squads. The other option, if your FLGS will let you, is to glue the skull and cable (Known as Servo-Skulls in the fluff) guys to a base and have them count as a basic Marine.
I hope that clears things up a little. Happy to explain any other bits.

thanks,
now the "fat boys" in the assault jump marine box - meltabombs?
similar item, except handle on side and spigot on top, from the devastator box = meltabombs?
the boombox (minus speakers) from the devastator box is ...? perhaps spare ammo for?
and the ravenwing upgrade sprue that uncle#T1 picked up on ebay - anyone have any clues on half of the bits on that?

The 'fat boy's in the Assault Marine box' (if you mean what look like massive grenades) are Meltabombs, yes. I'm not sure for the one in the Devastator set (I dont have this box).
Also, the skulls on cables are servo-skulls, you can just use them for scenic effect or for conversions. I used the 'halo' from one in part of a conversion to represent BA Chaplain Lemartes.
I can't help with Ravenwing, maybe if I saw a picture of the sprue.

The DA got 2 different sprues as upgrades. One is included in any veteran box, the other only in the ravenwing boxed set. So which of both is it?
A) - the sprue with parts like shoulderpads, arms, weapons
B) - the sprue with parts for landspeeders and bikes.

The fat boy from the devastator box is Multi-Melta ammo, and the boom box looking things are ammo canisters for the Heavy Bolter. If you look at the back of the heavy bolter's backpack, you can see where these would fit.
Like explained, these can be used to make extra wound Marines that look a little different from the regular ones.
