Painting Within the Lines

I know LotR isn't my game, but I wanted to paint up a Balrog for a friend of mine. This is how it turned out:

The flames are too yellow. Look at real fire and you see that it progresses from dark red to orange to yellow furthest away from the source. Also, you should remove the black from the tips from the fire: you may be looking for a sooty effect but it's not working by just painting some of it black.

I agree, i would go over the black on the tips of the flames, then go over the flames with watered down orange, which would hopefully run down and settle a bit at the bottom of the flame to give a good fire effect.

Look at the size of 'em!

Pretty much what the other guys said, although I don't think that Valkyrie said it right. Do a google image search for fire, and you'll see that the core is the lightest, with yellows and white. after the center, it gets orange, and the outer edges would be red. The head could also use a bit more color. I'd also suggest doing a bit more definition on the muscles. Still, it looks pretty cool.

Very good descriptions of painting fire here: http://hot-lead.org/advance/fire.htm

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman

The fire needs more work to look realisticand the black desperately needs highlighting, but the concept is cool

First off, thanks all for taking the time to reply. As I'm sure you can tell, I've not really painted something like this before, and kinda just forged forward blindly.

So, minimize the black on the flames and wash it in orange? Should I also add some skull white to the base of the flames? And highlight the black areas in grey?
