Orks make a great assault army, granted Im severely bias as I love the Orks. You can make a pretty good assault army using the vanilla marines codex as well. I guess with Shrike you can pretty much go all assault marines. AND those guys are pretty much all black, so really easy to paint for a beginner. Spray black, drybrush for highlights, POW your done.

There's a lot of armies that can go fairly assault oriented.
Orks, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Black Templars, Tyranids, Chaos Marines, Chaos Daemons, Eldar and Dark Eldar. I'd pick whichever one of those armies seems coolest to you.
I'd avoid Imperial Guard, Tau, and Necrons as they'll never really be assaulters. The odd remaining ones (Witch Hunters, regular Space Marines, et al) can go assault but are, at best, marginal at it.

Listen to this guy.
And just so you know, Chaos is awesome, I hope to see you in the ranks of the Ruinous Powers.
Oh, and he also forgot Tyranids, although their codex isn't out yet and won't be for a week or two.

I certainly appreciate the seconding of my opinion, but for the record I remembered the bugs, your sad devotion to the ruinous powers has clearly infected your eyes.

A special character from Codex Space Marines - he gives Marines the fleet special rule.
alwaysryu wrote:I was thinking about going chaos daemons but i heard they weren't good for newer players
They potentially aren't. It's just the way they play is very different from most armies and takes a while for lots of people to master. They're also a fairly expensive army to get into due to all the metal minis in their line. As far as ease of play I'd probably say Orks are the easiest to learn for a newbie (pretty much 80% of Ork tactics can be summed up as;
1. Take lots of Orks.
2. Put Orks on table.
3. Point Orks at enemy.
4., Waaagh!
The biggest drawback with Orks (and Tyranids) is that both armies tend to require a lot of figures and while GW has lots of very good deals out there to get those figures affordably you will have a lot of painting and carpal tunnel in your future with those armies.
Seriously though - my real suggestion for you is to look over the armies I listed in my first post. Read the story behind the armies and look at the models and just try to find one you think is coolest. That's really the best way to find an army for yourself that you'll want to keep playing. If possible I'd even suggest heading into your local gaming club on a 40k night and talk with some of the players there - you might be able to find someone who'll let you test play an army for free and give you a feel for whether you might like playing it or not. If you think Chaos Daemons just look and sound awesome and you want to play them - then don't let anyone say that they'll be too complicated for a new guy. Yeah, you'll probably lose a lot at first, but you'll figure them out sooner or later and at least you'll be playing an army you like

If you are worried about the painting, both Orks and Nids can be done very nicely and quickly using the Magic Dip technique.

Blood Angels have a fair number of special rules for movement, but no real extra movement phase. Quite a few of the armies I listed above as assault oriented have special ways to move themselves forward into combat quicker.

BAs are supposedly (or has it been confirmed- i'm not sure) getting a new codex soon. They are a very assulty SM army, more than space wolves. They are based on normal marine armies but assault squads are core and they have a few other nasty combat units like death company. Many of their units are sligtly altered vertions of normal marine units but more tailored on CC.
Overall they move fast and hit hard.

Blood Angels DO get an extra movement phase. (Due to the 'Wings of The Primarch' special rule). They also get re-rolls to hit when they charge, always strike first and can assualt the turn they deepstrike.

You might be thinking of Over-Charged Engines, which let's certain BA vehicles move at extra 6" in the movement phase. A great ability for rhinos and razorbacks.
