So I got a chance to play with the actualy codexin hand today against my buddy and his guard.

My list

Hive Tyrant- 2 twin linked devourers hive commander 225

3 hive guard 150

3 hive guard 150

10 gaunts 50

tervigon- regen catalyst 190

10 gaunts 50

tervigon- regen catalyst 190

6 stealers 84

6 stealers 84

trygon 200

trygon 200

tyranofex- cannon thing 265

His list
CCS- 3 meltas astropath
chimera

platoon
squad 1- heavy bolter
squad 2- heavy boter
PCS auto cannon

10 vets- 3 meltas

10 vets- 3 meltas

10 vets- 3 plasmas

vandetta

vandetta

vandetta

punisher- pasque

punisher

medusa

Mission
5 objectives, dawn of war. 4 objectives placed across the the length of the table. And 1 just off favoring 1 side.

He wins the roll to go first and takes it. He deploys his platoon on 1 onjective and his command squad and chimera behind them. His vandettas are outflanking. He gives me the side with the objective in my deployment zone. I deploy my tyrant and 1 tervigon on a flank across his platoon. I put one Tervigon and stealers into outflank.

His Turn 1
He comes on and cant see anything with the tanks. The infantry platoon use some orders and bring my tyrant to 1 wound after som horrible saves.

My turn 1
Army comes on all on one flank. Tervigon spawns 10 gaunts but rolls doubles. The tyrant and tervigon hide behind a building to block LOS and the tyrant shoots the infantry platoon and actually makes them flee. The tervigon casts feel no pain on the tyrant.

His Turn 2
1 vandetta comes in form the side that my army is on and the other came in on the other. The vandetta that came in on a corner far away from all of my troops. Hes trying to stay out of range of the hive guard. 2 vandettas and pasques punisher all fire at the punisher and put it down. The second punisher blew away the gaunts that were spawned last turn.

My Turn 2
1 Trygon came in right in front of his army. 1 squad of stealers came in on the right side and charged the chimera with the CCS and platoon. They blocked the exit point and blew up the chimera so the CCS was destroyed. 1 Tervigon came in too and charged the vandetta that came in the corner and immobilized and shook it. My army moved up. Tyrant used leech life and gained back a wound. And the Tervigon casted feel no pain on the trygon.

His Turn 3
His next vandetta came in and came up next to my tervigon that has been on the table and unloaded its meltas. Between the vandetta and the meltas my tervigon is down to 2 wounds. The Punishers and 1 vandetta all shoot the trygon and he only takes 3 wounds. FEEL NO PAIN IS RIDICULOUS. His platoon somehow kills 5 stealers and wins combat by 1, but my stealer passed his save. He also kills off my tyrant.

My Turn 3
More stealers in on the side I want and come in right next to the vandetta that unloaded its troops and kills the vets. 2nd Trygon came in near the vandetta on the other side of the table. My other trygon kills a punisher. Gaunts and tervigon capture 4/5objectives. Hive guard are in range of a vandetta finally and kill it. The other tervigon that out flanked killed the vandetta and spawned gaunts to help out the stealers. They beat the platoon and catch them.

His Turn 4
Move around take pot shots.

My Turn 4
My girl friend texted me and really needed my help so we called it game and I had to leave all my models out on the table for like an hour after assking my opponent to watch them. Glad that got taken care of. The game was pretty much over anyway

So what I've learned

Tyrant- not great but not bad. Not really worth 225 points. devoures arent really worth it but I was afraid of hordes. Ill give him a heavy vennom cannon next time. Worht it just for the +1 to reserves and possibility out flanking tervigon.

Hive Guard- What a dissapointment. Really hey look good on paper but 24" while may not seem horrible, is HORRIBLE as your only realy long range anti tank. Deffinitely swapping for zoanthropes in pods.

Gaunts- meh they're gaunts as always I didn't expect them to do anything except block charges and hold objectives.

Tervigons- AMAZING. I might addd another. But, no more than 3. An army of 5 just doesnt have killing power, how I have them right now is great for boodting the units that actually kill things.

Genestealers- Good to have. Can out flank which can be criticl gun lines, although they have lost some hitting power.

Trygons- Great units, I dont know if the upgrade to prime is worth it, or regenerate. But when given FNP they are nearly impossible to kill unless using high strength low ap weaponry and how much of that can you have to put 12 wounds on them? They are exactly the mobile element we needed.

Tyrannofex- seems too pricy for what it is. I'm probably going to tradde it in for another tyrant.

Good
Tervigon
Trygon

Decent
Stealers
Gaunts
Tyrants

Bad
Hive Guard
Tyrannofex

Let me know what you think.

Good read! I went back and couldn't find mention of the Tyrannofex anywhere in the report. What did the big guy end up doing exactly?

Ah that is only 1 game...better to play more with the same units to get a better judgement of them...there are games where any unit from any army sucks...but if they suck in most of your games, well, that's another issue..

The tyrannofex came in turn 1 and ran instead of shooting because of night fight then got blown to bits on his turn 2.

Thats true I'm willing to give the hive guard another chance, but the fact that in dawn of war and sometimes spearhead their range becmes an issue, IMO means they aren't going to make the cut into a tournament list.

Good report and Good observations. Should play some more games though.

If your running drop spore Zoanthropes you might want to run Death Leaper to deal with enemy Psychic hoods. Sort of expensive though.

Hiveguard own the standard mech transport lists - I think that is their contribution to the metagame.

Poor tyranofex, try not to run him anto all of those guns.

That IG list was strange, punishers are too short range to use against Nids. and the Paskquisher is double the cost of 2 normal LRBT. I almost felt bad for him. But then I love seeing nids win.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

Good read.

Against IG who keeps everything far back, Hive Guard does feel pretty useless for turn 1 and/or 2, and even after running up, there is no guarantee for cover.

The tervigon does sound very solid. Should we welcome the trygons to heavy support and convert the old fexes to tervigons?

I'm curious about gargoyles. So many people talked about how good they are on 4E, but not many people uses maybe because the model aren't cheap or points expansive in the codex. Now that they are plastic and cheat in the codex, yet I haven't seen a battle report about them. If anyone know where I can read about them, please point me to the right direction.

Avariel- I agree but IMO hes just too exspensive and too situational.

Somnicide-in theory they do, but in reality nids nolonger have problems with long range since we can get MC's in there face so quickly, and have podding zoanthropes to help out.

Sexiest_hero- He was put out there to take punishment so I couldhave my tyrant not die so I could have my +1 to reserves.

liao89-I believe it's safe to say that tyrgons are the new must have heavy choice. As far as gargoyles go I really want to try them out but i'm waiting for the new plastic models, they look promising, but at 1850 points are just too tight to actually fit them in.

good report. Just one thing i noticed was you said that your genestealers covered the access point so the CCS died wit the chimera they assaulted. I dont have my rulebook in front of me but im pretty sure they can make an emergency disembarkment that allows them to get out anywhere within 2" of the hull but are pinned for the remainder of that turn.

Dont know if that would have affected the outcome, but tis somethign to remember for next time.

Khornatedemon is right on with his rules catch.

Thanks for the report!

I'm glad to read these reports, as I assemble the forces for my own army. I decided on 'Thropes over Hive Guard, and You've helped me feel better about my choice. I'm going to have to at least playtest a Tervigon, because keep hearing good things about them.

I think Deathleaper would be a nice addition to your force.

In what way did stealers loose some hitting power? Care to explain rules-wise?

Good Battle report. Have you had a chance to try out the death leaper?

As far as I know from reading the new codex you can not have 3 HQ. So you can only have either a Tyrant and one Tervigon or two Tervigon and no Tyrant.

You can make a Tervigon a troop choice for each unit of termies.

Read the Codex myself so looking forward to future reports.

Death leaper is expensive but Deathleaper:
1. protects your army from Psychic powers especially Tervigons from Jaws of the Warp Wolf by reducing the Rune Priests leadership making it more difficult for the Rune Priest to cast it
2. Reduces the effectiveness of one Psychic hood so you can get off your Catalyst for feels no pain, Zoanthrope Warp Lance among other things.

Actually That guard list could use some improvement.
CCS should have 4 Meltas.
Inquisitor with 2 Mystics and Tarot is missing. This should give the Guard player some protection against deepstriking things like Trygons and Mycetic Spore Zoanthropes along with a +1 to go first 83% of the time.
Assuming the Melta Veterans go in Valkyries why not give one of them Demolitions.
Platoon infantry squads should have Auto cannons or maybe Las cannons to hunt tanks with bring it down.
One of the Platoon Infantry squads needs a Commisar for the Stubborn Leadership 9.
Platoon Command should be mounted in a Chimera with 4 Flamers as such a small squad on foot is vulnerable even with cover.
Swap out Punishers for Manticores. They are more vulnerable with AV12 instead of AV14 but kill more with D3 Strength 10 AP4 templates. They also can shoot at vehicles and have a decent shot at killing them.

Can you tell me what page that is on cause I can not find it anywhere in the codex. We all thought the same thing, but it is only listed as a HQ and nothing says it can be a troop choice for any reason that we can find.
