When it comes to models that don't have actual bases, where does one measure to in regards to being in assault contact.
In my case, I was discussing this topic with several others and the idea of a Defiler just having both arms straight out like Freakazoid and oh look, his claw hits you now you're assaulted or is it the base hull on the main body. Judging by how you calls help call this one I may just make a defiler with a giant lightning bolt on the hull with a crazy green-stuff hairdo.

I believe there is a section in the rule book that answers this question.
I cannot remember page number, but i believe it does state that you measure from anywhere on the hull. This would include the close combat arms, as i see it.
This topic has always had much controversy as the rules are not particularly clear.

I have always said the hull of it meaning where the arms and legs attach to the body because as i see it you cant measure to the sponsons of a tank when assaulting it. That is just how i see it.

I've gone down the route of discussing this with my opponent before the game starts. Agree on where all measurements will be taken from for both parties.
I normally go for the main body rather than the arms. Those arms can add a good few inches to the Defiler. Oh and by the way I'm the one with the Defilers
so its not like Im crying 'unfair'

The 'Measuring Ranges' section of the Walkers rules (page 72) answers this quite nicely. It even specifically addresses the Defiler... and includes the legs as a part of the hull.

Storm Trooper with Maglight

Something I always wondered about melee and defilers: where do the troops melee? Does a 30 man mob of Orks swarm the legs, or the outline of the legs? Can they go under said legs? can they advance to the main body part?
Anyone care to shed some light?

Given that it's generally 3 inches off the ground, advancing onto the main body would serve no purpose.
They swarm the legs and attack it there.

Just remember that if your defiler has its arms way out in front of it that you also measure from them for purposes of deployment, etc. So there really is no point to it. It won't allow you to get any closer.

I was more going to model it for hilarity sake, maybe calling it the Freakmobile. Other than that I already figured the claws were figured most for measuring
