Hi everyone.
Like the topic title says I've been thinking of starting Fantasy for a while, but was unsure of what army I wanted to start with. Anyway I finally decided on Wood Elves and I was wondering if I could get any general tactics or advice about the army.
Thanks in advance

Avoidance works pretty well. Taking glade guard archers as core and a couple of glade rider units for redirection. Just shoot the opponent and run away when he gets near and, when he's sufficiently weakened, move in for the kill with wardancers/dryads on turn 4 or 5. Also, if you're going to play that way, march block him with an eagle to slow him down and prolong your shooting.

Avoidance, thinning down stuff with shooting before engaging, picking your fights carefully, take advantage of woods if there are any (and remember to bring your own, as woodies can plop down 1 forest in pitched battles).
A good base for pretty much any wood elf army would be 3x10 glade guards and 3x8 dryads. Some decent shooting and melee troops right there. The specials/rares, cavalry selection and character setups are far more problematic and complex, though.

Thanks for the replies I was thinking of taking some Wardancers, Dryads and some Glade Guard with the Hero choice being a Wardancer and some Spellsingers or Branch Wraiths as well. The main thing that drew me to the Wood Elves was how they could move a forest or dissapear from one and reapear in another to avoid something big and how they ignore it as they move through it so I was thinking of basing the army around using skirmishers to manuvure around the ranked up troops and also basing it around Tree Singing as I could use that to either slow them down or even get stuff to move away from any threats by moving them into the forest then surfing away. I also liked the tree spirits they have as well and thought about making an army around the Dryads, Treekin and Treeman (or whatever the big tree guy is called). Are either of those good ideas?

Woohoo! More players starting fantasy with wood elves. We should start a club
(I like your ideas but since I'm just starting them, too, I'll reserve comment until later!)

Good ideas i like wood elves.
What i use for my wood elves are two 10 man squads of glade guard a 10 man unit of dryads maybe down scale to a 8
i used a noble with waywacther and hail of doom arrow 5-6 waywatchers with champ and a 5-6 man unit of wardances
Oh yes glade guard riders
Theres a guy at my gamesworkshop who plays chaos my glade riders charged a unit of chaos knights. Riders did nothing all 6 missed then the horses all 6 hit (4 to hit) then 4 wounded (5 to wound) then he rolled three (he had 1 knight left who ran into woods and got caught by my glade riders) Lets just say he hates my glade riders

Kind of funny that they'd run into the forest to avoid the Wood Elves but I guess they don't really have a choice.

But don't you basically auto lose against Daemons anyway.
The other army I was considering was full Tzeentch (because I like Tzeentch, but haven't started an army for it yet) , but I've heard that's too cheap. I'd rather be able to still find games if I spend around $100-150 to start off the army

Terrifying Treeman

For Wood Elves this is a good character setup:
Spellsinger (Gen)
Level 2
Calaingor's Stave
Divination Orb
Branchwraith
Wizard
Blight of Terrors
Branchwraith
Wizard
Cluster of Radiants
Annoyance of Netlings
This choice of characters allows for a strong magic and dispelling phase with 6 dispel dice for about 300 points
the blight of terror wraith should be as close to enemy's as possible causing terror everywhere
and use the other branchwratih to issue challenges to enemy unit champs and with a kickass stat line and can only be hit on a 6 in a challenge, can't ask for more.
Put the Spellsinger in a unit of Glade Guard and both branchwraiths in a small unit of Dryads (about 10)
Thats my current 2 cents.
