Hi there, i've been looking over the current space marine codex and just need an issue clarified. When i combat squad a ten-man tactical squad, do these count as my 2 troop choices for the purpose of a tournament? The codex seems somewhat unclear on this point, and i'm hoping i can remove the need for my scout scout and use the extra points for a drop pod.

In the FoC they count as one, in the game two (so you can hold two objectives)

right thanks, so that'd mean if i was required to have a minimum of 2 troops choices i'd need to fit another squad into my army?

To clarify a little:
They're a single Troops choice on the FOC.
They're two separate Troops units on the table.
So yes, you need another Troops choice in order to have a legal army using the normal FOC.

ah right thanks a bunch, the codex wasn't fantastically clear about it. Also, on the subject, my army list for 600pts
Captain/Librarian -100pts
Terminator squad-200pts
Tactical marines -170pts split
-sergeant, meltagun (+5pts) and 3 boltgun-equipped marines
-heavy bolter, 4 boltgun equipped
175 pts
Drop pod- 35pts
+10 locator beacon
45pts
Scout squad-75pts
shotguns +scout sergeant with CC weapon and bolt pistol
+meltabombs (5pts)
80pts
I'm just wondering if i should sacrifice the terminators for a cheaper elite choice and then replace my scout squad with a tactical squad? and then remove the locator beacon obviously.
I ask because playing today against my friend's new 600pt necron force, i was unable to get my terminators onto the board until the later turns and my scouts got mangled.
if you could just give an opinion on the list that'd be great thanks

I'd suggest more tacticals - i would drop them entirely and get a tac squad with a rhino for some mobility
No need to post point costs

right thanks very much- luckily i've got a rhino ready for painting and another tactical squad on order- so drop elites altogether and slip in another 10 man squad?

At that points level bodies is fairly important, as is some mobility - the rhino will give you that.

Plasma is always good, to kill anything high value. Just dont go too overboard - my friend runs a highly competitive list whcih is mainly as many 3+ saves as he can manage, using razobacks for anything "heavy"

Hey Ashtaroth, just an observation: You don't have to decide before the battle if you want a tactical squad to split. You buy it as a whole tactical squad and then decide on a game to game basis whether you want combat squads or not, as well as which marines/weapons go into which combat squad.
Ignore me if you already knew that!
