I bought a foam box at Value Village thinking "Score, Warhammer storage!" Apparently I wasn't the only one. When I opened it up at home these guys fell out!
I know that these are crap pictures, but can anybody well me what they are? They look like old-school grots, but I'm not sure.
Well, their sure grots now.

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

They were a much smaller company, and their stuff wasn't aimed so much at kids in those days. Plus I think they put warnings on the packaging...
Be careful if you're stripping those models, the lead isn't as forgiving as white metal is. Automatically Appended Next Post: plus the '90's remark is right- I remember an article in an old White Dwarf I inherited in the late 90's.

GW used to make their models of pewter containing lead, but mostly tin. Most models used to be made out of this sort of pewter, and really, its not a big deal. You would have to inhale the material while you're working with it or actually lick the models themselves to suffer any effects of lead poisoning. Contact risk is also low, as long as you washed your hands before handling food.
However, considering how cheap and easy it is to simply not use pewter containing lead, there's little reason not to switch to lead free pewter.
The more you know.

@ Vlad - if you think about the change in scale of GW Orks over the past 4 editions, they're probably closer in size to Grots compared to modern Orks.

I think you're quite wrong to be that dismissive. There are lots of reasons to use lead, especially in the past rather than today. It has a lower melting point so is quicker and cheaper to melt for casting for a start, and because tin can lose the high temperature quickly it starts to solidify meaning that the mould isn't filled properly and you get a miscasts. It is avoidable it you heat the metal thoroughly of course but things are done quickly on a production run and thus lead would be the preferred choice for some manufacturers and the amateur caster. For the modeller, it has two advantages, it bends easily but doesn't crack like white metal, so although it is more easily damaged, it can be more safely straightened out. Secondly, as it is soft it is much easier to work with when cutting, filing and drilling. Pure tin kills drills and files in a way that lead doesn't. The flip side is that lead is soft and excessive handling can rub away fine detail and they are more easily damaged by bumps and drops. Swings and roundabouts, but not *dumb* IMO.
Many companies have switched to white metal to sell to children. and probably to follow certain rules about selling under European regulations. Some companies still cast using lead and there's no real problem with it as long as you aren't stupid enough to put it in your mouth. Remember, GW figures were not marketed at children 20 years ago, they were not for sale to under 16s, or under 14s, I don't recall the blurb on the back of the packaging.
I would point out that because armies were often cast in lead, and the further you go back the higher the lead content, it was considered a major reason for not playing with unpainted miniatures. Handle them for long periods and your fingers go black which isn't healthy if you then eat a sandwich. Of course, with the widespread use of lead-free alloys it's become more acceptable to play with unpainted miniatures, because they don't share the same health risks. But some years ago it would be considered a faux pas to put out any unpainted lead on the tabletop.

The original Orks were much smaller than the current standard, but they are definately "Orks". I've spotted a couple of yours on these two pages.
First of yours on the left is "Gort", see first link, top left minature. Your ork on the far right I think is number "440212" in the second link, bit hard to read though, he's third row up from the bottom, far right.
