I have several Spare marines and Heavy Weapons. I like fighting 'Nids or MC, should i build a Devastator Squad or just add in some models into my Sternguard Squad as they act as cheaper small Devastators? So what i am after is :-

1. What is the Best setup for Devastators VS MC, would it be Heavy PLASMA GUNS, or should i save Money and go for 4 x ML?

2. Would i be better just getting 2 Heavy weapons for my Stern Guard and forget the Devastators?

Vs MC, you want snipers and/or Stern Guard. Ether way you'll be landing more hits (per point) and stand a better chance of causing wounds.

Also don't forgot scouts with heavy bolters and their nifty ammo!

PCs are risky on devs due to overheat. Try to keep the PCs on your dreads :-)

I think 1:1 of PC and ML would be a good start. Both are wounding more MCs on 2's or 3's and punching through most saves. Plus if you have to multi-task them, you can hit a unit with 4 blasts for thinning out hordes and 2x S7 and 2x S8 shots make for decent anti-tank as well.

Sternguard yes, Snipers NO. I know every one loves snipers but I'll be the one to say it "They suck" Hitting on 4+ and wounds on 4+ up is just plain awful. Sternguard fill this role best in spades.

Seriously Hellfire Shells... it's a blast weapon getting shot with a BS3... even if it hits it's gunna cause only one wound

ah keep forgetting standard scouts got hit with BS3 let me rephrase. If you have BS4 snipers these are excellent at hunting MC. The only standard SM scout that should be used are those with Teleon and a heavy bolter.

Snipers suck, period. Even Pathfinders suck. Telion sucks too, most of the time. No offense Tri, but I use them all the time and the only thing they do well is hold an objective and keep their heads down. If they actually kill something, do a happy dance.

If you have a squad of 5, you will average one wound a round which will most likely be negated by a save.

The new Nids lack the 2+save they used to have in abundance, so a 4 missile launcher dev squad is the business again. Long fangs are stoked!

8 man, 4 ML dev squad will be your most reliable long range big bug killer. Take that to the bank, son!

Right then, I have two options.

1. A Sternguard Squad 125pts + ML 5pts and HB 5pts = 135. or ML 5pts and PC 10pts = 140.

2. A Devastator Squad 90pts + 4 x ML = 60pts = 140.

So for 2 A I may as well take the 2 HW Sternguard, unless i want the ELITE slot for something else in which case i take Heavy Support Devastators with ML's. Happy times. All i need to do is spruce up two of Devastators to look like Veterans and i can interchange them depending, thank god for the Bits box!

If you're worried about MC just buy a 10 man sternguard and use the bolt guns.

9 sternguard rapid fire=18 boltgun shots=12 hits=10 wounds.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

why are only 9 sternguard rapid firing in a 10 man squad?

10 hellfire wounds equals 3 unsaved wounds on a 3+ bug. They then get charged and boned next turn. On the plus side though, they don't care if the bug is in cover or not.

The missile launchers average the same number of unsaved wounds and do it at 48", which is a huge benefit.

Sterguard are hot sizzle, no doubt, but a dev squad has a much greater threat range which means they shoot more often, therefore giving you more bang for your buck.

Lets see they're still mainly Toughness 6 with a 3+? (going by the web site since my codex hasn't arrived yet)

10 Scouts (sniper + H.botler) 1.48.. wounds & 101.3pts per wound
10 Scouts (sniper + Missile) 1.7.. wounds& 88.2pts per wound

5 Dev (4 missile) 2.36 wounds & 64pts per wound (10man is 97.4pts per wound; 5man squads are risky, even nids have range)

TL-Assault cannon (ie razorback) 0.987 wounds & 76pts per wound

10 Sten (hellfire) 1.9 wounds & 131.6pts per wound
10 Sten (>12" 3.7 wounds & 67.6pts per wound
10 Sten (combi-Plasma) 4.4.. wounds & 67.5pts per wound
10 Sten (>12" 8.8.. wounds & 33.75pts per wound
10 Sten (combi-melta) 5.5..wounds & 54pts per wound

Well 10 Stenguard with combi-plasma get you the best wounds per point but yes, they have in charge range (guess in some way doesn't matte they only get to shoot once). Razobacks don't do badly but 5man dev does best (until they get to 8 man then they're equil to scouts)

(edits due to a typo in my excel sheet ... spoted and fixed)
