SO this came up and I dont know how to answer it. I used search but it wasn't clearly answered for me so I will post it myself so I do know.

When shooting at a unit on a hill do units in-front of you block line of sight when they are on the same level. Ie a 10 man unit of archers shoots at a catapult. They have a 20 man unit of spear men 4 inchs infront of them. They can see the stone thrower clearly but does the unit of spear man block there ability to shoot due to some rule.

I am pretty sure that if you can see the stone thrower you can still shoot at it since you have line of sight and are in range and doesn't it count as a large target

Line of sight rules on p.8 & 9; Hills & elevated positions.

If the catapult was on the hill, it can see over the spearmen to target the archers. LoS works both ways, so the archers can see over the spearmen to target the catapult on the hill. In fact, if the archers were in ranks, all the ranks would be able to see, and to fire if they were in range.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Yup. All ranks can shoot UP at a unit on a hill.

the same applies to large targets aswell (ie a Giant can see over a regiment of spearmen at the archers and the archers can see the giant)

Ja. Note: This is how a Gnoblar army most commonly kills things. By using ranked blocks of units with Sharp Stuff to throw scores and hundreds of shots at any Large Targets or unfortunate other units which wind up on a hill and within range of the Sharp Stuff.

Another hill question: since units on hills are stated to be able to fire in two ranks, can I line up one unit in a line (say, some thunderers) and then park war machines behind it and still have them able to see? Or, can a war machine see over another war machine? Can a second gunline see over the first one as long as the first one is only one model thick?

Dwarfs will be happy with a “yes” to any one of these questions.

Units on a hill block LOS to and from other units on that hill. So the answer to all 3 of your questions is no.

UNLESS: You are firing at a large target- in which case all on the hill can still see it.

OR: You are using some multi-tiered hill that you've agreed upon before the game. These are pretty rare, and most of the time, I've seen multi-tiered hills counted as just a single level.
