I did some maths today comparing a Sternguard squad with a tac squad. Here's the setup:

Tac Squad: Meltagun, Serg.: Kombimelta, ML, Rhino (220)
Sternguard: 2 Kombimelta, 6 guys, HB-Razorback (200)

Now according to my maths the effectivity against literally anything is higher for the sternguard, except vehicles, where they turn out equal with a slight advantage for the tac, thanks to ML and repeatable shots with the melta.
Now that the SG seem to outrun the tacs in any challenge, (only drawback being less bodies) why not field 3 squads and make them scoring via pedro (minimal expense compared to what a captain with similar equipment would come in at pointswise), while troops are filled up with 2 scoutsquads (snipers or min in a landraider or...) to open points for other parts of the army.
I really thought about never fielding tac squads again when I got the numbers before me... what do you think?

Sternguard take an Elites slot, so you lose the opportunity to take Dreadnoughts or Terminators. They're also a lot easier to kill. If you take Pedro, you should also really take a power fist in Sternguard units, as Stubborn means you won't be retreating out of cover anytime soon.

A Tactical squad can combat squad to effectively become 2 scoring units. They can also deal with things from longer range a bit better due to the heavy weapon. The other thing to bear in mind is that the Sternguard are not that hard to kill, they have to disembark from the Razorback to fire and when they do they aren't that hard to wipe out with only 5-6 guys (usually at close range as well).

Making your entire army stubborn in order to do this is the nail on the head. Combat Tactics, used correctly, is one of the biggest advantages Marines have. Stubborn means you will end up in far too many combats that you would rather not be in.
