What are Citadel's paints made of are they acrylic or what? And as for the question about the washes this is a simple question but how do i apply the wash im painting some blood angels and i have baalite red as the wash do i just paint the entire miniature? Or do i avoid certain placeslike where i have some white painted on?

Citadel paints and damn near everything except certain testors or tamiya paints are acrylic.

I would use devlan mud wash or ghryphonne sepia over mechrite red for your washes. Red wash over red paint has little effect.

As for the order in which you paint, I paint large areas first so in your case armor, then wash it, then do details.

The washes are rather versatile in that you can cover the whole model in them or paint them into detail areas with a smaller brush and careful application.

Citadel paints are acrylic - just like most hobby paints.

The easy way to apply washes is to base coat the whole model in red, then hit the figure top to bottom with the wash. Come back later and detail the chest eagle when the wash is dry.

Unless your a very patient person, a red wash is not going to give you a strong shading effect on Blood Angels. Go with Mud or Purple. These colors will give a strong shade color that will be noticeable when the figures are on the gaming table. Use the red wash in small amounts to blend in extreme highlights on your display figures.

Some paints thin better than others, but yes, you can thin acrylics with water. Vallejo, GW, Reaper, P3, and cheap craft paints all have their fiddly little differences, but they're all acrylics.

Don't paint much red, so I've never tried to wash it. The thing about washes is that unless they're darker than the base color, you won't see them (unless you use a different color). Thraka Green can shade a bunch of the lighter greens, but it won't do you much good with a basecoat of Orkhide Shade, which is quite dark, already. I'd try the suggested brown or sepia washes already recommended, and add a suggestion. Test Model! Don't want to waste a ton of time stripping models washed with a color that you don't like. Paint one trooper up red, then give one section a wash with one color and see how it works. Don't like it? Try something else on the other side.

The new GW washes are thin enough to use with just the water on the brush itself. The older inks could use a bit of thinning.

Water is fine for thinning. Acrylic extenders (art store) or Future floor wax (grocery store) can also be used.
